Description This comic follows the adventures of the four Pallet Town rookie trainers.

Last panel, from left to right--Ash, Bret, Gary, and Lorin.
You might remember from an older submission that Bret and Lorin were orignally named Robin and Lorraine, but I changed the names so they all match a bit better.

I just love the glee, carefree nature here, it kinda hits me with memories from the first episode of the anime when I was 8 years old or something, whoa long trip in the memory lane right there, thanks for bringing the glee of bein' a little kid again!

Also love the coloring and lighting here that sets the warm home feeling, quite atmospheric!

And I agree with those fellas, they really seem like very believable kids!

Dang, I'm glad it was that nostalgic for you!  With this comic I'm kinda living my own dream of seeing the Pokemon world portrayed as I imagined it (I actually don't think I even got past episode 3 of the show, cuz I disliked its take, I imagined something totally different).  The difference prolly won't become as apparent until the rookies are out in the wild, but I'm glad this is just as little-kid inducing for you reading it as if was for me imagining it

And I'm glad you said that about the lighting!  I really wanted the room here to look very warm and homey, a sorta safe, nostalgia-looking place where the kids start off with Professor Oak before their adventures.  I'm really glad it showed through for you!  And I'm really glad so many people think they're believable kids, I hope I can continue that without being too heavy-handed with it.

Oh, so it is Ash! I thought it was Red for a second.
I like the lighting of panels 3 and 5.
And I agree with ~eppoif1 , they are believable kids!

Well, I did dress him like Red, so it's only natural you thought that! I didn't want two characters wearing blue, so I gave him the red clothes. I plan on making his pokemon team be more like Red's though... so I guess he's sorta a hybrid haha!

Glad you like the lighting It's a little trickier for me to do this more atmospheric coloring/shading, instead of super saturated!

Really glad they're believable with the very few pages so far! That's important to me!

If he's dressed like Red, and uses most of Red's team, why not just make him Red...?

Two reasons, mostly.  The first is my using the name Gary instead of Blue, because his personality will more closely reflect the rival in the anime than the games/Pokemon Adventures manga.  Because of that, it'd be strange to have a Gary and a Red in the same story.  The second reason is because Red comes with a very hefty legacy that I neither wish to emulate or change.

I mean, but you're already adding in new characters, and dressing Ash as Red anyway.... I wouldn't say that having the character behave like Gary, but be named Blue would be all that much of a stretch.

It's whatevs, though. It's your comic, man. Do it the way you want to.

I chose the names based on preference, not sure what else there is to say.  It wasn't much of an inner debate on my part.

Yeah, man. Like I said, I'm not trying to tell you how to write your comic.

I'm just saying that as a long-time, casual Pokemon fan and a reader of your comic, the choices just struck me as a bit odd is all, not bad or anything.

Sorry, at the time you asked, it completely slipped my mind that the prime reason I went with the anime names is because this story follows the anime in terms of the whole Pallet Town situation--where Gary and two others get starters, leaving Ash with pikachu.  And that's the premise of the story as well, filling the reader in on these two Pallet rookies unmentioned in the anime, as well as all four of them as a whole.  I feel a little stupid now for not being able to get to the root of my preference the first go around haha.

And I suppose even then, Ash and Gary still could've been named Red and Blue, but then I'd feel forced to name the other two rookies color names, which causes problems because I think in the Pokemon Adventures manga, the girl is named Green?  She's named Green and Blue I suppose, just as Gary's named Green and Blue, depending on the localization, and that's also something I didn't want to bother with.  If the story's premise is based off the anime, and their personalities will more closely reflect the anime's portrayal, I figured there's no reason to not follow the anime naming (plus I didn't want to touch the legacy of the game counterparts, as I mentioned).  Hopefully this answer's a bit more helpful.

Wow, yeah, dude! That now makes complete sense to me! Haha. Naming them Ash and Gary is completely appropriate, if that's the case.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Ok, that makes sense.
Yeah, atmospheric shading is a little more difficult to work with (especially in the dark), but the outcome definetly makes up for it. In fact, I've been thinking of doing this type of shading for my later Sonic comics instead of using the same colors to shade.

That'd be cool!  Yeah, it's harder, but the settings seem a lot more believable I think

This is so cute, I'm genuinely believing in this these kids! They're acting like kids, holy crap, this is amazing!

Really glad you find them believable so far! It's easy to forget rookies are ten-year-olds after all, and I'm hoping to express the equally endearing and unbecoming behavior of that age as this progresses
