Sketch by =RiotaiProwerI was so psyched to get a collab with Hydrocity Zone as the backdrop! The scariness of the level made me hate it as a kid, but playing it later I realized it's incredibly beautiful (with awesome music too~). One of my favorites now.
I thought this was gonna be one of the more easier collabs, but the geometric shapes ended up stumping me for a long time in this lineless style. A really long time lol. I was so overwhelmed with the challenge that it'd never get finished. But once I got it that aspect figured out, I went all out with all the other elements. Really hope you guys find the water rushing through believable, and I hope you enjoy the tunnel's depth! (and try to ignore the wonky perspective...

Ah man... One of my favorite stages from back in the day! Everything is done pretty well even despite the wonky perspective. One of the many reasons I still love Sonic to this day remade in this awesome artstyle!

Rontu, this came out amazing! Just staring at the color scheme makes it all feel as nostalgic as I intended in the sketch.
Your lineless style amazes me once more. It's like some sort of strategy that you have to undergo in order to make sure everything fits nicely in the image without blending together unpleasantly. I really love how you used the water, both to show the color differentiation between the walls underwater and out of water, and the reflection of light on the greener walls. The bubbles are also very subtle, so they don't create too much distraction.
I really appreciate your half of the collaboration! You did an amazing job. I'll have to use this as my wallpaper for a while. Thanks for doing this!

I apologize again for the long wait. I shouldn't have taken so long with these collabs. I had my reasons, but they should've been done sooner regardless.
You hit the nail right on the head! That's part of the fun of this style, the challenge of making all the elements stand out with just differences in hue. Sorta like a puzzle. Like in this, I wanted to make Sonic more purple like he is in the game, but it ended up blending too much with the darker greens of the background, so I had to go more cyan. I'm glad you've enjoyed it! Thanks for collabing with me too!

And now I want to play Sonic 3 again! I'll agree that Hidrocity it's definitely one of my fav classic levels and it's music it's just super duper awesome!
I hope that Sonicteam someday realizes that... 2D Sonic games would look Amazing in a hand draw style like this, I mean Rayman did it, and it was goooood! 2D Sonic deserves this treatment!

Really glad you like it. =RiotaiPrower did a really good job capturing a great snapshot of the entire level in such a simple composition. I really wanted to make this a great throwback to the Genesis era, so I'm glad it makes you wanna play Sonic 3!
Oh, I agree. My personal opinion is Sonic has steered way too far into realism in terms of style. I feel a surreal and stylized approach makes the most sense, and is a ton more unique. One can only wish~

Haha, I NEVER played this zone as Sonic, I was always Tails so I could swim. It wasn't til I was older that I realized it's actually not that bad of a level
