I was so psyched to get a collab with Hydrocity Zone as the backdrop! The scariness of the level made me hate it as a kid, but playing it later I realized it's incredibly beautiful (with awesome music too~). One of my favorites now.

I thought this was gonna be one of the more easier collabs, but the geometric shapes ended up stumping me for a long time in this lineless style. A really long time lol. I was so overwhelmed with the challenge that it'd never get finished. But once I got it that aspect figured out, I went all out with all the other elements. Really hope you guys find the water rushing through believable, and I hope you enjoy the tunnel's depth! (and try to ignore the wonky perspective... )

Hope you like it, =RiotaiPrower ! I know it was a super long wait, and I'm sorry.

I gotta ask you two questions:
#1) How did you create the water effects? #2) Where is the light source coming from? Lighting confuses me to no end and the lighting in this picture is done so well, but I can't seem to pinpoint a place where it originates.

1) It was actually very simple! One of the few times I used a layer effect. I created a layer above the background layer, drew the ripple reflections with white, then set the layer to overlay (I also sign most of my work in an overlay layer, since it makes the signature noticeable but not obtrusive).

2) There's two light sources going on. The primary light source comes from the top left (technically it comes from the top middle, but the entire pic is tilted so). I made that light bounce off the bottom of the tunnel in order to create an underlighting effect on Sonic (so the tunnel floor is the secondary light source here). Of course, in every piece I do fudge the lighting quite a bit, since I can't depend on line art to differentiate shapes.

Interesting. The water effect looks great for it to be such a simple technique! I've never taken into account that light reflects off of some objects; I'll have to remember that.

Thanks for the help!

I think this keeps to the taste of Sonic 3. The color scheme... everything. I knew instantly what it was when I looked at it. So that alone, you should know means your attempt won. Like I don't know how much you used the original screen shots as a reference and I haven't seen the level in quite a while (I played the hell out of Sonic 3 though)... and to me, this reminds me this seems straight out of the level in terms of the little nuances. It seems to be spot-on... again, /without looking/. And that's a good thing!

I referenced a screenshot for accuracy, but I did exaggerate the colors quite a bit, so I'm glad you think it looks straight out of the game Also that it keeps true to the Sonic 3 style, which of course I'm very concerned about replicating! Thanks!

Oh my god... here comes a long comment (':

You know, I stepped away from Sonic for just ONE reason.. the fanbase.
But whenever I see Sonic artwork like this, a few tears always flow from my eyes because of how beautiful
my first year as a Sonic fan was (': I drew him for fun and because omg i LOVED HIM DEARLY~!
HIS GAMES, HIS SHOWS, HIS MERCHANDISE~! IT WAS PURE BLISS

Later around February, it started to be more like.. "Just draw to please your fans" but I still tried to make myself believe
I did it all for the love of it, while it really wasn't.
I recently started to realize that despite I already grew out of Sonic, he stills an awesome memory (':
I know you don't care xD but meh.. this piece made me get all sentimental..

I'm really glad you commented.
We're hardly even acquaintances, but I do think about your situation now and then, not because you stopped with the Sonic art, but because of what led to it. A lot of people leave fandoms because of idiot fanbases, but your situation was especially--I guess I'd say--damaging. I think you know what I'm alluding to.

I'm somewhat lucky being an old school fan, I didn't have much of a fanbase to appeal to or interact with So a lot of the ridiculousness of the fandom bypassed me. But I've heard time and time again from people who enjoy drawing Sonic that they just couldn't do it anymore, that they were getting so tired of it but kept doing it for others, until eventually they burnt out.

It's a shame the fanbase can do that to people, but I'm always happy when artists expand their subject matter or even start doing original art. I think you remember when I said this to you, that I was glad you were exploring new things There's always time to step back in if you get inspired by Sonic again, or not, but I'm glad you're not doing it out of a feeling of obligation anymore.

Haha, long comment, long reply, I hope you don't mind. But I'm really glad to hear this piece reminded you of what you love about Sonic, without all the drama attached. That's really the best I can ask for, to turn up old but cherished memories that formed at the height of people's admirations. Thank you for commenting

Hmhmm, actually... yeah.. after all I went through I couldn't
see Sonic the same way I did before v u v it was too scary,
so it just made me run away from the fanbase and even the friends
I made throughout my stay, but I'm also glad I did because I realized so
many things, one of them being.. the Sonic fandom was isolating me from
the real world... and without offending anyone.. it was such a waste of time.

But anyways, you're lucky indeed xD I wish I was like you, haha I love it when
you have your own point of view on something without anything or anyone affecting
on it.. it's an awesome feeling isn't it? Because, it happens a lot of times
for example, you like Sonic and Shadow as friendly rivals, then you come to the internet
and BAM, childhood is over.. lol

And yup~! ^^ I do remember and thanks for encouraging me to keep on doing it~!!! I can remember
most of it for some odd reason, it just made me feel like if I was growing up xD I know it's stupid
lol

don't worry about it~! ^^ I appreciate you replying

Glad we're on the same page. It's hard to be truthful on what I think about fandoms/fanart because I know it would upset most people. Like your experience, I see it often estrange people from the real world, and take up time that could be better used for more creative things. That's why I always encourage artists that consider exploring other avenues. Exploring yourself and your own ideas, I think it's so important. So I'm glad you feel leaving added to your growth, a positive more than a negative.

Haha, yes, I'm constantly thankful my little classic Sonic world is mostly unscathed by fandom. So little rule 34 in my neck of the woods~ When I try to look up other fanart, I die inside from some of the results... which is why the only way I find fanart now is by watching groups with rules that match my tastes. I've sworn off the search bar

BUT leaving the fandom has hopefully helped your own personal view of Sonic return to you? I try to keep out of the fandom as little as possible for that reason, haha.

I'm glad you remember! And no, I don't think that's stupid I remember I went through something similar years ago. Glad you're doing better! I really am.
