Thanks for uploading this - it's extremely motivating to see that one can reach such beautiful lineart by drawing freehand and not screwing around with the pen tool

What I can give are insights into how I work. Not all methods work for everyone.

Hi! ^^ I donβt know if the question was already put (and in that case, I'm sorry :s), but... How do you make a line so perfect? I have a drawing tablet, I use it but I'm not really a professional x). Donβt you ever miss your line? Because there isnβt right to make mistakes apparently! I donβt know... It's a question of experience I guess. Of training?
( And Iβm sorry for my very bad English! I hope that itβs understandable)

It takes some practice being steady with the tablet pen. You usually need to make fairly quick strokes to avoid jagged lines. Also, working large helps draw smoother lines. My documents are always at 300-400dpi.

Intersting colouring style, i like how you use the lightsources here.
And it also gives me a little hint, why i always have the feeling, that on my pictures the characters and the background would not belong together... just need more practise with athmospheric lights.
Thank you for this tutorial !

I'm so glad you posted this! I've been experimenting with different brushes, but it's time consuming to figure out what's what. And, for me, frustrating. I need to just force myself to sit down one day and DO IT. So ... thanks!

rooster82 In reply to Niksche [2010-09-26 09:19:16 +0000 UTC]
Yea, the amount of brush choices can be overwhelming. I'll tell you now that the hard round brush and the pen opacity flow brush will be you friend. The fancy brushes take too much RAM to draw and will cause uneven strokes if your computer isn't fast enough. Also working on a document that's 300dpi will help give you nice clean strokes.

Ohhhh awesome! I love hearing about different people's techniques. I'm still trying to perfect my own style so I like to mix and match various techniques. I always have a hard time with consistent light source/shadows so I might try some of your methods for that part.

Interresting tutorial, you use vectorised lines for the inking?

rooster82 In reply to Margenal [2010-09-24 17:44:25 +0000 UTC]
Not all the lines. Only long ones that need to be continuous and have no breaks.

Good tutorial, though - I had wondered how you did your lighting, since it's so vibrant and effective. (Was noticing that alllll through the knife fight scene!)

And I love You. Srsly. After sketching up a page yesterday and starting to ink the way I usually do, I suddenly got the urge to give your tutorial a try... and HO MAI did it make a difference. What completely beats me is that when you gave me the same EXACT tip in the summer, I couldn't get it work at all. Anyhoot... I'll drown you in credit once I finish the page.
