Description And here she is! This was sketched for as a prize in my recent naming contest. I hope I did her characters Hades and Persephone justice. I even came up with a little story for this picture for them

Those who know him will tell you that Hades, Lord of the Underworld, will not smile in the spring and summer months. A grave god already, he is even more noticeably somber when the world above is bright and blooming. For his dear wife Persephone is far away in that above world, joining her mother as they make the spring come about.

But there comes a time every year without fail, when a chill wind dances teasingly down the halls of Hades realm. It carries with it the first red leaves of autumn, the stirrings of winter. A small smile breaks at last over the god's sullen face, and a blush rises to his pale, cold cheeks. For it is as if Persephone herself has whispered into his ear "I am coming home, I am on my way. It is fall again, I am on my way."

Happy then are those who serve him in his dark and shadowy realm, for he becomes all cheer and mirth, and joy and excitement. Persephone is on her way.

I hope I did your characters justice my dear. I really did my best with them, though I think I may have made Persephone a bit too flirty.

I won't do all of these in color, but this one needed it I felt. I chose rough color pencils for Persephone to show her earthier, 'spirit' nature here, and I used light photoshop painting on him to make him look smoother and colder.

I had such fun working on this! It's one of my faveorite stories Hope you enjoy it my dear!

These characters belong to :iconslikyfuzz: but this drawing belongs to me, no stealing from me or her, kay? 'Cause listen, she's got a god of the underworld on her side!

Haaha, he looks so happy! Probably pretty accurate portrayal in all honesty. Though what's with the bullhorns, besides they look kinda cool? Isn't that more of a devil thing>

Lol! Thanks! I actually am not sure about the bullhorns. This is a fanart piece of another deviants version of Hades and Persephone. The bullhorns are her work, though, I don't think she added them intending for them to have any sort of devil connection.

We'll call it artistic license then. Aha I see! I like those too, though I like yours more. Probably because I'm not huge on digital.

I only mentioned the devil because Hades gets equated with Satan/ruler of hell in a lot of modern culture - when in fact he ruled both the good and bad parts of the afterlife and was a neutral god. Thus I see a lot of Hades art where he's looking like a demon or with horns of some sort.

For some reason I just thought of bull skulls, and Romans and Greeks had a lot of bulls in their cultural imagery...and...I dn't know where I'm going with this now XD.

Indeed, he is rather unfairly depicted. At the risk of sounding as thouogh I am belittling rape, I will say that Hades did kidnap and presumably rape Persephone, but he's also the only God who didn't go off kidnapping any other girls. (wow, that so totally doesn't make him sound any better.)

Madame-Enfer In reply to Rosengeist [2012-06-13 02:19:07 +0000 UTC]

That's true. Bulls are especially linked with Poseidon, I think... they were one of his symbols (maybe Zeus' too?) and there's Pasiphae and the white bull and Poseidon 'getting with' Demeter in bull form etc. I dunno where I'm going with this either.

yay, a risktaker! Well, I'm not saying it's good, but that's kind of how the culture was back then. Kidnapping a woman was not considered dishonourable. I've never actually read an account where he did rape her literally, though I suppose it may be deducted. If he had married her he would have considered it his right. But still, it must be said it's a step up from turning into a snake/taking the form of Hades and sneakily getting a girl pregnant, which is what her own dad Zeus did to Persephone.

My point is, Hades was, in his own way and considering his circumstances, a pretty stand up guy. They say that she grew to love him.

Lol, indeed, I'd probably have to ask Silkyfuzz where she got the idea.

True, true. For some reason I can't help but imagine there was a rape involved...though, I think this might be because of that "Rape of Proserpine" work from classic sculpture. That being said, I think that that was an Italian piece from the Rennaissance and not neccesarily one from ancient Rome or Greece, so they could have taken liberties, or not had the best sources to work from. I don't really know about that one though.

Madame-Enfer In reply to Rosengeist [2012-06-13 03:07:01 +0000 UTC]

If you do, let me know

True. But 'rape' in that case was an archaic term for 'kidnap'. 'Ravish' is a similar thing - rape/ravish = kidnap in very old literature. Makes thinks a bit muddy.

This is so lovely! Why didn
t I see this in my deviant thingie.

I really love the look of the characters. The shock on his face makes me happy. I love when characters have extreme emotions on their faces!

Thank you Lol, my da page does that too. Sometimes I'll be surfing on the page of someone I watch and all of the sudden I see a deviation I've never seen before.

Thank you so much honey, that means a lot. I love extreme emotions as well.

This is beautiful! And no joke, this is the most ironic thing in the world- I just had to write a poem about Demeter, Persephone, and Hades for a contest, and was thinking about doing a longer verse novella about just Seph and Hades. You did a great job capturing them!!

Serious? I might have to take you up on that offer...
I actually started thinking about it today (because my other story is going uber well and I actually didn't obsess about it today O.o) and it gave me some ideas on expanding the plot and characters. Thought about making the younger brother a villain....
It would definitely be a novella, though, cuz I can't handle another full-length novel right now, lol.

o-oh...oh...ooooooooooOOOOOOHMYGOD IT'S SO PERFECT!!!!! I just... I can't even. Dude I cannot tell you how much I love this!! My eyes have gone all teary for joy!! Hades' expression of surprised delight (which is absolutely wonderful, and I adore it) is like a more subdued version of my face right now. And Seph is just flirty enough I'm beyond words, you've made me so happy :there is no smiley to adequately express my extreme joy, except maybe this : You've got the interaction between the two down so well, Seph loves surprising him like that, and Hades, in his quieter way, loves to be surprised by her.
I was expecting to get something awesome, because, c'mon, it's YOU; but this is just, I mean I even got colors and... just *floats away on a cloud of bliss*

I love you so much right now.

ooohhh I love this story, whats cool is that there are 2 versions of this story. Its the same story and one of the differences is when Persephone returns. From what my sister told me (she took like 2 Greek mythology classes) Persephone only returns to the surface when harvest starts, which is spring and fall. So she returned every other season. And there is the version where she (of course) returned to the underworld in the Fall. Anyway I digress This is a great piece and the story is awsome. xD
