Horrendous?  That's objective.  From what I hear from the reviews, Color Splash was apparently a step up from Sticker Star.  I played Color Splash, and I found it to be an overall enjoyable time.

This was from before its release.

I reviewed it since, and gave it a mediocre score.

I hear tell it's considered an improvement over Sticker Star.  Your thoughts?

So with the Nintendo Switch comming out, do you still think Nintendo is doomed?

I would very much prefer if you not ask me these questions. Never did I say Nintendo was doomed.

You know what's sad is I'd rather have a SPM2 than a Sticker Star 2, At least that combat system wasn't utterly annoying... And it had a great story and characters.

The problem with Sticker Star IMO is it's awful battle system which kills anything else that could have possibly redeemed the game, Which there was already very little in Sticker Star at all. Maybe if it was a 3D SPM in terms of gameplay it would have been passable and probably a good amount of fun despite it's bland story.

((I liked SPM despite it's departure from the RPG elements, but even then it felt like an "RPG meets Platforming".))

I've never really understood some of the backlash fans gave SPM other than refusing to have anything different from the RPG formula. I wouldn't want it to be a series in itself, truthfully, but it by itself (and even as a game in the PM series) it's pretty darn great

The name of this series is "PAPER" Mario. When you consider this title alone, it makes perfect sense why the series has gone from the story-driven atmosphere of the older installments to the "arts and crafts" motif we see now.

RyanSilberman In reply to sallen623 [2016-03-07 16:42:40 +0000 UTC]

No it doesn't. The Paper aspect was just for the visual style, and only the visual style, with exceptions being Mario's own abilities, which do make sense in a world made of paper. However, Intelligent Systems knew back then that it was much better for the sense of humor to actually be written by people that knew how to write an engaging and even dramatic comedy, and the story-driven atmosphere was easily the best part about the series, period. Never before in a Mario game until then would I have imagined Mario roaming around a town full of thieves partly run by a mafia gang, joining a wrestling federation, rescuing a partner from a massively trolling Internet nerd, breaking out of a slave prison, being warped into a toy box, etc, etc, etc.

NONE of that is in Sticker Star or, since SS is the "new standard", Color Splash for that matter. Instead, we now have Bowser-kidnaps-Peach (or drains color from Prism Island), and Mario must play guessing games while Toads make paper and sticker/paint puns in order to rectify these problems. Screw this new mentality.

Then that means... The "glory days" of Mario's time in RPGs are done for at last. The first two "Paper Mario" games, "Super Mario RPG" before them, and the first and third "Mario & Luigi" games are more than enough to comprise all of Mario's great RPG endeavors.

Maybe if they didn't pretend they were continuing the Paper Mario games, I would be fine, but here they are, sucking the life out of it as brutally as possible, trying hard to make it like an ordinary Mario game when they were anything but. And as new generations of players take a look at these, the odds of them realizing they share the series name of games leagues better increasingly becomes minimal.

RyanSilberman In reply to OldClassicGamer [2016-03-04 15:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Another comment questioned my skepticism here, and I responded with a list of things that link this to Sticker Star judging by the announcement trailer alone. You should probably check that out, and understand why I have every right to bash this thing until its head splits open so I could cram it with the intelligence of Paper Mario games of last decade.

I always hate it when someone says that. The person that says it simply makes the blind assumption that that's what it's about when it is anything but. This isn't a "new thing". This is a thing from four years ago that people absolutely loathed for being the biggest disappointment (that's being generous) in the Paper Mario series. That guessing game with minimal plot and focus on an arts and crafts convention mechanic is getting a direct sequel with the same exact formula set for it. Aka nothing that made the first three Paper Mario games actually awesome and charming in an almost meta sense.

Here are the things that link this to Sticker Star, from this announcement trailer alone:

1. The NAME of the game continues to employ arts-and-crafts-related conventions, something not done in any Paper Mario game title prior to Sticker Star.
2. The game is centered around said gimmick of paint in the way Sticker Star focuses on Stickers
3. There's a 2D-Mario-style map screen, like in Sticker Star.
4. The plot given so far is that the color of Prism Island is drained and Mario must bring it back. Similar to how the Stickers in SS have gone missing and Mario has to get them back (I bet you this is a Bowser-kidnaps-Peach story just like in SS, and that he would be why the color is drained)
5. The area shown in the announcement has loads of areas for Mario for hit with his hammer for a special outcome. While not necessarily a bad thing, this is a mechanic Sticker Star employed as well.
6. Notice how there are no unique characters shown at all whatsoever, and all the Toads look alike.
7. Don't know if this is a stretch or not, but I'm willing to bet the floating paint bucket shown is this game's Kersti.
8. There are still "real world objects" like in Sticker Star, such as the fan.

This is Sticker Star 2, and we've officially entered an era of Paper Mario that forgot what the series was about.

Still think Modern Nintendo is better than Classic Nintendo, with games like Star Fox Zero and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze?

RyanSilberman In reply to ToxicIsland [2016-03-04 19:43:50 +0000 UTC]

I don't even know. On one hand, there are totally awesome games still.
But on the other hand, this decade is where I've realized Nintendo's vulnerable and is bound to make some mistakes this day and age, with games like Yoshi's New Island, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and the lacking Virtual Console lineup demonstrating that very well.
