Wow, this was a very informative tutorial. I really like how you DIDN'T use black! I love the values, you seem to work so patiently. I really want to try out maya but it does look quite intimidating.

Hmm, so how long does it take a person to make something that detailed in Maya?

What's the difference for you between a tradicional color-mixing technique and your add-colors-later technique? I always use the first, butthis actually seems like it would help a lot in certain situations, but what are the pros and cons for each?

This is very helpful. Digital paining is still kind of a mystery to me, although I have no excuse not to learn, since I have a tablet and Photoshop.

Painfully , humblingly good. Been drawing for 30+ years but new to digital colouring. Apparently the bar has been set quite high!

Lol! this is the third time on this day that I hear/ read something about Michael J. Fox's "tremoring" hands. My hands shake too... only when I'm drunk, or when I'm driving... but never both!! ha ha

I also have tremors in my hands and it's one of the reasons why I gave up on an art career when I was younger. I'm glad to see you have persevered where I didn't.

aw don't give up! all you need to do is rest your forearm on your drawing surface and draw with your fingers instead of your wrist (most of the shaking happens at the base of your hand, right?). works like a charm!

ChatonRose In reply to RYE-BREAD [2009-08-05 13:24:35 +0000 UTC]
Sometimes that works, but sometimes (like today) the tremors are also in my fingers. Then I pretty much have to wait for them to calm down for another day.
There was I period of more than ten years when I did give up because of it. I wish I hadn't because I could have created so much if I had believed in myself more and persevered through it. Thank you for being an inspiration for me.

This frightened me.
I think possibly because of how very old-fashioned I am when it comes to art, but that doesn't stop me from loving arts made on the lovely computer-thing.
Please note that I don't think I sound normal, but I am wondering how on earth you come up with such wonderfully fabulous titles.

I use the overlay-method as well for coloring grayscale images, however I usually just do one layer of color. I'll have to try your idea of layering different tones to help with lighting effects.

Is there much of a difference between orange and mango sherbert? I've only had mango but it's quite delicious.
Wonderful tutorial, by the way. Perhaps I'll get off my butt and fix my computer so I can try it out.

From the fifth pic to the sixth, is there a melting between your sketch and the 3D eco-wagon? Did you redraw it?
Thanks for the tut!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RYE-BREAD In reply to MithriLady [2009-08-02 18:19:03 +0000 UTC]
I traced the wagon to define the outlines better and kept the actual 3D render on a layer below it. Then I painted over the 3D render in grays to give it a hand-drawn look to match the rest of the illustration.
