Description
This is an illustration I did of a Nothronychus that is featured in the latest issue of Prehistoric Times magazine. Based on skeletal reference that I gathered at the Arizona Natural History Museum. Drawn and colored entirely in photoshop.Related content

I like his head of hair. Haha. Nice job, by the way. I would definitely have a heart attack if I saw one of these.

Its thought that they may have been either herbivorous or insectivores. It is unclear as to how the claws were used... defense? Gathering food? Also I added the "hair" because its commonly thought that these creatures were adorned with proto feathers which resemble hair. Plus he's stylish

Claws!!!!???? How were they used? Defense! Gathering food! Sex! Intimidation! Looks like a therizinosaur. As for insectivore....hmmmm....mighty big bugs back then, eh? I never bought that theory, even at a discount. Quite a fine drawing!

Thanks! Yeah, the mouth and body is clearly not that of a predator so the speculation runs rampant as to how those monstrous claws were used.

Tummy scratchers!!!! No? Why is it so important to figure out the way they were used? is a question I want to ask of many paleontologists.
Do we use our own hands for eating? OR for car washing??? Or sex?
Or painting? Or picking up lumber? Or one of a million other things that are part of a tool chest of uses? One of my guesses for claws like that is digging for clams.

A very valid guess. I think guessing what any defining characteristic of a long extinct animal is, of course, is to give us some insight as to the lifestyle that this creature lived when alive. We have nothing to go on of course besides the fossil record so devising the primary use for limbs or extraordinary characteristics makes them less of "monsters" (as is often too common in dinosaur reconstructions) and more of animals.
