Description Happy New Year all! Sorry for the lack of posts as of late. Thought I'd check in with an update on my progress with 's amazing Allosaurus vs Brachiosaurus piece. Its been a long time in the works but I've finished the line work for one of the Allosaurs and and well on my way to finishing the Brachiosaur. But good things come to those who wait... right? Enjoy!

Don't know where I found this allosaur art originally, but somehow it ended up as the lock screen on my iPhone (just the allosaur). Hope you don't mind. I just love the stride and those arms look mighty strong and dangerous.

Nice work, Ryno! One piece of criteekeeness...the chest likely bulged out a bit and narrowed towards the hips. These predators really had narrow hips and wide rib cages. The line on the thigh-hip which shows the differentian is fine, but, IMO, you need another for the stomach-chest area,

Thanks for the crit. I did a small tweak just now and I'm sure a lot of form issues will be worked out when shading comes in later. Until then I'll keep pushing ahead! How are your versions coming?

Life in turmoil...nothing new there...but I hope to finish my version soon. What you see in my latest version, the last one posted, shows the body forms of all three dinos pretty much as I want them. The background will be changed, and the colors and shading on the dinos will be worked, but their forms are basically solidified in that version.

I don't know why I get flack for decorating the dinosaurs with spines and such. Many modern reptiles have them. Someone wants them smooth, be my guest. Many genera have known horns and scales that would have made them look more like iguanas than anoles. And stegosaurs! Don't get me started on stegosaurs!

Dinosaurs lived in dangerous times. Each species had many enemies. I doubt if any dinosaurs really had such fine scales as GSP describes. Why would an animal bigger than an elephant have scales as fine as an anole?

Take a look at African-Madagascan chameleons, crocodilians from anywhere, iguanas and even the agamids. Take a gander and maybe even a goose at ceratopsian head adornments. Most all of them had bony frills. Some, like Kosmoceratops, Einiosaurus, Monoclonius, Triceratops, Eotriceratops, Chasmosaurus etc, etc, and on and on had decorations such as we never see on animals these days, except for reptiles, birds and some wild and wonderful amphibians, and many mammals. Hey! LOTS of weirdly decorated animals these days! Markhors, anyone? Mandrills, anyone? Practically all the gallinaceous birds? Like chickens and turkeys and pheasants and peafowl and...need I go on?

Wanna see weird? Look up matamata. Alligator snapping turtles. Tortoises.

More birds...hornbills...guans... I guess most all the dinosaurs MUST have been smooth, since smoothness of integuments with no decorations seems to be the comparative rarity, and I am including colors in this. Hey! Wait! Earthworms are smooth...sort of...but wait, they burrow underground, have no skeletons, so they must be good models for dinosaurs.

Mammals...elephants have nothing unusual as far as weird growths, once one discounts the tusks and the trunks. Hippos have teeth that would give a Tyrannosaurus nightmares. Rhinos, anyone? Smooth skinned as a baby's hind end, eh? Not! Armored skin and HORNS! Horses have manes! Camels have humps and kneepads. Plese. Show me a smooth-skinned, no decorations BIRD! Other than one de-feathered for eating, where can we find one? Geez! Anyone ever see a moose? An elk? A mule deer? A bison, a buffalo, and long horned bull? Warthogs, anyone? Or wild hogs?

So dinosaurs MUST have been smooth-skinned, with super small scales. Oh, and they must have been saran-wrapped, emaciated freaks, like Paul says. NOT!
