Description
NOTE : This isn't really a tutorial, but since there are a few people asking me how i did my shadings crisp-like, so i've decided to show how i did it (altho i'm not sure if i did it in this way myself OwO;; ). So this serves as a pointer for those who might want to try and add a bit of these into their own ways of doing it.Warning :This is for those who are a mouser only, and that have the time and patience to do cell shading one at a time. And that for those who love to do raw crisp cell shadings, not the soft-type shadings.
Nothing much to be explained, since most of them are already mentioned. But i'd like to point out that if you are doing the highlight on the hair, you can either do it on a new normal layer or just do it on the hair layer itself (which is why i've eyedropped the original color of the hair so that i can just wipe off the mess for the highlight job with the paintbrush). I usually hates to do new layer since it'll usually cover up the lineart below it anyways. But it's up to you to decide. I'm just doing my part in showing on how i did it.
Cell shading style (no dodge tool involved). If it's too crisp, just use the blur tool at the edges. I love the way it is for my part.
Make sure you know where the light source is coming from so your shadings will look and make much more sense. I usually ignored that rule so do not follow my example if you want perfection (i'm pretty much of a person who didn't really care of perfection and usually did it on instinct).
Now you know why my cell shade is crisp and not that wobbly even if i use a mouse. Kind of. :/ since this is only half of my secret. No trick there tho since it's basic.

Oh, and I also know a way to get rid of all the white area, just leaving the black lines, so you can color underneath it much like you would a cel drawing. It's really easy too. If you don't already know how to do it, just send me a note and I can explain it to you. :]

Ahhh, I remember when I used to do work like this. @.@ I commend you on it, because it's very time consuming. But do you know about the nifty little button right next to 'lock' (the checkered one) on the layers window? If you hit that after you've colored in the base color for the hair, any other color you do over it won't go out of the lines. That way you won't have to do any erasing afterwards. :3

Don't know if you've tried this or not before, but what I do to keep that from happening is setting the lineart layer to multiply and keeping it at the top of the layers palette. Then all my color layers are below on the normal blending mode. Also, the pen tool works well with mouse+cell shading. Nice tutorial.

Heh, I'm even lazier than you, I put all my shading and color all on one layer, sometimes I'll put all the color on one layer ha, but then again I am just lazy.

holy crap @_@ i never knew you can "expand by 1pt" i checked open canvas and yes.... ;_; all these times, i've been roughly selecting areas and wasted a lot of time erasing my art clean. yes, paint and erase, very tedious work > _<; anyways, thanks =]!!! now i can more more efficient

Nice and easy tutorial. I only attempted CG'ing once, so I'm not sure, but each layer after the background has to be on Multiply, ne? If it isn't, wouldn't when you shaded the first part of the shading of the hair, and then overlapped it with another shade for another "paint, erase, paint, erase etc." part, then it would be like darkening it, wouldn't it? @.@;;; *Is confusing herself*

ryo-hakkai In reply to BluL0nLeyBre3ze [2005-01-05 08:53:53 +0000 UTC]
Hm? No. That only happens when you put the property for your brush in 'multiple' mode. If it's on multiple mode instead of normal mode, everytime when you put a shade on, it'll darken each time. So check your brush properties before you start shading. :\

XDDDDD *Laughing while hitting herself on the head* I'm so stupid!! ;_; I don't know why, but I feel like crying, laughing and hitting myself for a bonus of my vast knowledge of... stupidity. @_@;; TT_TT If I had known earlier, I would've attempted CG'ing even more. [Shading is a *freaking* pain in the arse for me] Thanks! I *really do* appreciate your help and I'm practicing your shading style now.
TT-TT Now I know why you're "*the* Ryo". *Admires you even more* I feel like I just discovered a huge secret... lol.

TT___________TT I really wished u had that up earlier..........well.........I might as well try to use ur method and a lil of mine.
Hey do you suppose that for some of the shading, that you could've used Paintbrush>Mode>Multiply? I'm using that now, it's also very effective if you want the darker color look instead of having seperate swatches.

ryo-hakkai In reply to Chibiko [2005-01-05 08:21:54 +0000 UTC]
Lol.
If you mean by shading the tones using that in the same layer as the original color, no. I don't really like to do that. I love to do it separately, if that is what you mean. But sometimes using that kind of trick won't get the exact tone of color i want, so i usually avoid it :\

ah wait, guess you mean cheesy eh? this ain't a tutorial apparently, just to show how i did my work, which i guess people could try to add the same thing to their own style.

ohhh so thats how ryo ryo do her cel shading X3
well for me i mostly use pen tool to create insanely curve liines and close them up and make selections and just fill them with the shadings and the rest is rubbing out teh excess lines...
cant seem to work a lot on the hair shines using like that... so ill just try your erasing method then X3
*absorb this small knowledge from ryo's head*
LOL XD

paranoid1 In reply to DarkVixenOfLight [2005-01-05 22:13:49 +0000 UTC]
well one way of getting the lineart clean is to use photoshop, and go to image -> adjust -> brightness/contrast and turn up the contrast to the white spots gets completly white. Then go to windows -> channels, and press the "load channel as selection" button (looks like a dotted circle). When you push that button, all of the white areas get selected. Hit the delete key to remove that. The lineart looks a bit thinner now, but this could be fixed by selecting the lineart layer, and enable "lock transparent pixels" (the buttons got white and grey squares in it). This will allow you to only paint over the lineart. Then use a large brush and paint over all of the lineart. If there still are some lines or dots that are not supposed to be there, just use the ereaser tool; shouldnt be too hard now that it its a completly white background. oh btw you should make a new background layer that is completly white, since you deleted the other one.
This thing about "lock transparent pixels" is also very useful when shading, because then you dont need to worry about painting/shading outside that layer.
Anyways, good tutorial
