Description
Windows Vista has a super-cool sidebar feature which allows you to run little applets similar to Mac OS X Dashboard widgets. Unfortunately, the sidebar doesn't have any sort of calculator program in the default widget list. I couldn't find any calculator widgets online, either, so I decided to create my own. Unlike most calculators, which can only perform one operation at a time, Express Calculator allows you to enter and evaluate entire expressions at once. I find this mode of working much more convenient, and wonder why more calculators don't use it. In addition, the calculator keeps a record of the last four results, since I often refer back to my earlier work when solving a problem.I did the art entirely in Inkscape. All I can say is that it involves lots and lots of gradients.

Yeah, it uses the Javascript expression evaluator, which doesn't understand the ^ operator. I eventually want to hand-code a new expression evaluator that understands ^, but for now, I just use the exp() function instead.

Ahh.. I see. Good that it supports functions. Would I be allowed to add this to GDesklets applet library?

Sure, if you maintain it. When I come out with newer versions, will you be willing to re-package the updates?

I won't have Vista at least any time soon, which is a shame because this one looks very good. It's bordering on overuse of gradients and such, but still appears quite stylish. The only part of the design I don't like is the horizontal color change that crosses the input field. The application/widget looks very simple and easy to use, which earns huge bonus points for me.

Windows Vista in general overuses gradients and other visual effects, so Express Calculator looks right at home. The glare across the input field is annoying, so I've changed the code to reduce the glare whenever the input gets focus. This helps somewhat.
Sidebar gadgets are HTML-based, so they can run in any modern web browser (FF or IE7). See [link] to try Express Calculator out.

It is, but you can't use it. You don't have Windows Vista.

I love the way Blue Gradients always give out a really nice effect in applications. Well done, i love it.

Inkscape is great for just about anything. For everything else, there's Gimp (I'm finally figuring out how to use Gimp, btw).
