Description
Another skeletal for Jhator! And before I get jumped on, NO this animal could NOT fly in our reality. I know this, but Jha was not designed to be a 100% plausible creature, he was designed to be a believable gryphon.Anywho, here he is in his lammergeier/caracal glory. Finding reference for a lammergeier skull was TOUGH. I had to search for it in German. And there's no caracal skeletons on internet land, apparently, so I referenced a lynx and modified it from there. Other modifications include fusing of the thoracic vertebral spines to act as a socket/place for the wing joints, and I modified the pelvic girdle so that his filthy tail feathers, and corresponding muscles could attach there.
DELICIOUS BONES, methinks Jha might get hungry just looking at his own skeletal!

Cool! So I'm not the only nutter who draws skeletal diagrams of fictional creatures!

Very nice. Good description, too. I was curious about that pelvis. I wonder if you'll be trying your hand at an ecorche, next? Yay muscles!

Probably no ecorche. Just out of laziness, haha.
Thanks!

Aww, but it would be a good exercise in...muscle fibers! Hee hee. No problem, Sage.

Wowww. Its amazing that you can draw such a perfect anatomical (?lol) skeleton of a fantasy creature Great job!

screw reality, this is amazing! I love his head, bird skulls are so hard to draw.

Who said anything about being in 'our reality' anyway?

Oh my GOODNESS, this is lovely! I just love how much work you've put into it, making a fantastical creature appear plausable. Gah, you and your awesomeness XD
Out of curiosity, I presume you used the pen tool to get all of those fine lines?

Actually it was all by hand! They look so neat just because I worked SUPER large.
And thanks Nash

Well if you mean shoulder blade = scapula, there is a "double shoulder" (there's slender scapulas behind his humerus), but not anything like a double mammalian shoulder or anything.

yeh. oops.
its the biggest issue with hexapodial vertebrates right?
so gryphons and dragons would work this way?

No, haha. Like I said in my description, "NO this animal could NOT fly in our reality. I know this, but Jha was not designed to be a 100% plausible creature, he was designed to be a believable gryphon."
And I'll just copy+paste what I said to another person, "Gryphons have a LOT stacked against them in the flight department. In the case oh Jha here, the spine is too flexible, there's no keel for the massive flight muscles to attach to, the flight muscles would crush the rib cage when used, there's really no good place for him to put his back legs when flying, and the distribution of mass is too spread out...not to mention the need for hollow bones like you mentioned. The animal is just too darn heavy and not well balanced for flight. BUT I figured that's why I'd go for believable over plausible :>"

yeh the gryphon are quite a conundrum ren't they.
unless one says stuff like "they can also hold gasses inside like dragons so they float while they fly"

Very cool. I don't think i've ever seen a gryphon skeletal before. Might a gryphon muscular study be in the future as well?

Probably not, BUT you might want to check out this ([link] ) if you are interested in such things, and more plausible gryphon :>

Neat. Your skeletal and the muscle study in the link kinda makes me want to veer off of my normal archosaurs and try my hand at drawing a gryphon too.

nice! i was wondering where the wing bones would go on a gryphon. so long do you think the wings would have to be reality to fly, given all the bones are hollow?

SageKorppi In reply to rice-chex [2010-10-13 23:56:38 +0000 UTC]
Well it's not just a matter of wing length. Gryphons have a LOT stacked against them in the flight department. In the case oh Jha here, the spine is too flexible, there's no keel for the massive flight muscles to attach to, the flight muscles would crush the rib cage when used, there's really no good place for him to put his back legs when flying, and the distribution of mass is too spread out...not to mention the need for hollow bones like you mentioned. while he may not be entirely plausible for "reality" it still looks like a wonderful gryphon. i admire anyone who takes the time to at least make it "look" good and scientific, even if it is unreal.
