Description Due to popular demands ,I decided to make a coloring tutorial .To avoid page stretch ,I used flash to make a book like tutorial .I had a lot of fun working with flash, though it was frustrating at times. I checked the tutorial 4 times ,and had 2 friends tested it /correct it for me ,so it should work smoothly .

Just a Note. This tutorial is not for beginners ,it's for people with at least some understanding of how digital programs work .This tutorial is very general that means it have about a little of everything .

Tip .If you have trouble with picking colors or shading ,then you should probably try to find some good references on google (cloth ,skin ,shoes ,etc) . It helps a lot .Also picking colors comes with experience, you can't expect to learn it in one day ,again the best way to learn about the different tone combination is to find references and learn from them .

Well then, Enjoy ! If you have any questions about the tutorial , please comment here ,I'll get back to you asap : )

Tutorial made with flash 8
Programs recommended for this tutorial : Paint tool sai ,Photoshop ,opencanvas ,Painter

what is blending exactly ? I have photoshop CS4 and I seen such color mixure on gradiant tool, can it be set to brushes ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MindfulArray In reply to LadyAlluvia [2012-11-09 11:40:39 +0000 UTC]

It's basically merging the colours together so they're not separate blocks of colour - they fade into each other. The idea here is that you select the colours and brush them over into each other with a low opacity so they gradually merge. The gradient tool is for applying a set gradient to a shape, it's not a brush, I see where you're coming from though - those picture are what the ways of blending look like, gradient tool is something different. Hope that helps

a couple of quick questions: when you go to shade/highlight, etc, do you use the same layers as what's already there? for instance, if you're shading say, the pants, do you shade on the "pants" color layer? or a different layer directly above the pants, but below what every color layer was below the pants color layer? or do you shade on a layer placed at the top of the layer stack? (layer stack....yeah, couldn't think of a better term XD).

I ask because my blending always gets a little washed out at the end...do you preserve the opacity of the shading as well? I'm thinking of doing that so that I don't "wash out" the colors of the image. I've learned some interesting blending techniques with traditional paints that worked, and I'm trying to apply the same general principle with digital coloring

I must say, thank you very much for making this. It was thorough and clear, easy to understand, and rather intriguing. I learned a lot from it, so thank you very much for making it. The only thing I found a little confusing is when you talking about adding details to the face and using the layers to do that. But aside from that, I learned a lot!

I've loved your art for quite a while, and was super excited to try this coloring tutorial. This is the first piece I tried it on, and I had a blast. (Merrill: Blood Magic ). Thank you so much for sharing. Pretty much everything I've learned with digital art, and most art in general, has been from tutorials like this. People like you who are willing to share knowledge make so much possible for others. ^_^

Your style has changed quite a bit, from 2009 (when you submitted the tut) to now, so... I was wondering, do you still use the same coloring method as in this tutorial or do you use other means now?

What sort of painbrush are you using? I know that you're using Sai, but even in photoshop it's difficult for me to find a paint brush that is elegant enough for me to stay in the lines. I find myself kind of blotching over it and having to go back in with an eraser.
