12: Speechless

Emma could no longer ignore the nagging feeling in her heart. She knew she had to talk to Alex, the one who had shown her kindness and understanding. She felt guilty about hiding the truth about her feelings.

Mustering up the courage, she went to his work to ask him if they could meet at a nearby quiet park. Alex immediately agreed to meet her later that afternoon. Emma took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart, as she made her way to the meeting point.

When they finally met, Emma didn't know where to start, she couldn't find the right words to explain herself. "Hi, I hope I didn't keep you waiting," she said nervously.

He smiled kindly, "Not at all, is everything all right?". Emma took a deep breath and decided to be honest and direct.

— Emma: I need to tell you something, and I hope you understand.

His expression was sympathetic but at the same time prepared for whatever he was about to hear.

— Alex: Okay... I'm listening.
— Emma: Uh... well, I'm...

She looked down, feeling a pang of guilt. How was she going to hurt the most tender and innocent guy she'd ever met? But she had to, it was the right thing to do.

— Emma: I-I'm new to these things... I mean you and me, being together. And I really like you a lot actually, it’s just that....

He remained silent as Emma failed to formulate a complete sentence, yet amidst the awkwardness of the matter Alex maintained a patience and serenity that was both admirable and a little frightening. Emma looked down again in frustration until he rested his hand on her shoulder.

— Alex: Emma... Are you into someone else?
