Icons of the Library
Third Edition

14 June 2011: Updated instructions on installation. See below.
30 January 2012: Updated download links. See above.
It's been two years since Library Icons 2nd Ed. came out. This is, of course, too long, but things came up as they so often do. This release includes 918 icons in three different formats (Windows, PNG, and OS X), supporting the maximum resolution of Windows (256×256) and Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 (512×512). The PNG release is also 512×512.
Usage
Mac OS X: I can't help troubleshoot installing the icons since the newest Mac I have runs 10.2. Essentially, however, you want to download the original release of Icons of the Library which was structured and divided up to make the replacement job easier on OS X 10.5 when it first came out. Things have changed a little since then, so it's safe to expect mismatches.
If replacing the resources inside of each app bundle is intimidating, OS X also has icon packagers. Good places to start for icon replacement tips are this article from Apple for general files, and this FAQ for special stuff like application and system icons.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and happy modding!

The third edition for Windows is right over here (and was there before I even posted the OS X version!)
In the past I've been pretty wary of including automation facilities, because it exponentially increases the amount of work required for testing and release, especially when I'm still on Windows XP SP2, which isn't what most of the world is using. I usually mutter something like "this took forever to make; people should have to go through the same hell in order to use it!"
But I've finally figured out a complete and efficient workflow for automatic resource replacement via Resource Hacker and RC.exe, and the euphoric sensation that I'm feeling afterwards is making me realise that it's not the icon-making that feels uncomfortable, it's the manual replacement part!
So I dunno. Things may change for the fourth edition.
Just for reference, what version of Windows do you use?

I use a mixture of OSes. I believe each OS is unique and has a special place and way to do things. For Windows I use Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit. I also am using Windows XP Professional SP3 (the version that was used RIGHT BEFORE Microsoft released Vista). For designing things (if I can get good at it) is OS X 10.6.7. If you want I know a place where you can get an OS upgrade extremely cheap. Usually they cost +$200, the company I bought from managed to work the price down to $50-100 depending on the OS. if you're interested I can give you their info, and mention my name you may get a discount
I LOVE YOUR WORK! KEEP IT UP! YOU'RE AMAZING!

I'm grateful for your interest in my work, but I'm not so thrilled about the sketchy OS upgrade deals. I do not have problems keeping software up-to-date where it is both technically possible and desirable. The Macs I have currently are old PowerPCs and cannot be upgraded anyway.
Also: Service Pack 3 for Windows XP came out long after Vista was released. You may want to revise your copypasta for the next time you spam it. Please do not reply.

I've been using your British Library Icons ever since I started theming years ago - haven't found anything remotely similar since. My MacBook got stolen, so I replaced it, and the first thing I did was get rid of that ugly blue theme. Much better now! Glad to see you're updating! Thank you! Beautiful work, as always!

I think you told me that story already.

WOW! I don't use all your icons, but your work is so beautiful that your's are some of my favorites. Thanks, and I can't wait to see what these are about.
