Description This is a piece done for my major individual project for uni- an artisitc and aesthetic makeover for the original Quake, based heavily on H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.

As one of my favourite games of all time, Quake suffers from an unfortunate case of 'Worst End Boss Ever' syndrome. Seriously, you get to the end of an insane monster-filled, dark fantasy/horror shooter and you get some fat blob that just sits there?!

Now don't get me wrong- Shub-Niggurath is awesome (in the Mythos), but i wanted to take my ideas of Quake in a different direction. Thats why i decided to change the final enemy to another mythos entity, Yog-Sothoth. It fit very well with the storyline i devised for the remake, as he is the god of time and space, and that meshes entirely with the whole Slipgate thing the original Quake tried to execute. In my version, slipgates were invented not science, but by invoking Yog-Sothoth- and his attention brings many other hostile dimensions into collision with the earth. Gameplay-wise i have two ideas which i havent decided between that i am not going to post up here, but both involve in-game time travel.

Design wise, Yog-Sothoth i guess is a controversial choice i think. He is only ever described as a bunch of glowing bubbles, and might not be at all what the players expect. But thats kind of the point, and this initial concept displays the eldritch nature of the being and shows that it really is nothing of this universe. Players will be equally confused and horrified as this squamous mass of glowing cosmic weirdness descends from a maelstrom in the sky to devour their very essence.

I agree too about the final boss. It is not as the Makron in Q2 at least something to fight with

interresting point of view.... i share your opinion that Shub-Niggurath wasn't a good choice and Yog-Sothoth sounds like a pretty good idea to be honest IT WOULD BE GREAT... pleeease redesign quake for me <3

and design wise Azathoth would make a great end boss... don't you think? i mean he's the center of the universe ...EPIC!!

lol i dont think it would be a good idea to kill Yog-Sothoth. It IS the universe, well, at least it says that it's spheres are all the existing dimensions.
It wouldnt be convenient to "kill" the universe, unless youre some kind o' evil Mastermind with a plan to destroy the world or something...

How to deal with Yog-Sothoth without destroying everything ever? Ranger (that's what his name is in Quake III, at any rate) thwacks it with eldritch sorcery-enhanced super rockets until it backs the fuck off and takes the other monsters with it.

It reminded me of peacock feathers some how, but when I zoomed in it looked more like upside down flames from a driftwood fire.

But Quake? (I mean I've played it and all but...)
