somewhere along the line these started getting really long and i'm not sure how it happened. i ended up splitting one in half and so you're left with something of a cliffhanger...on a very low, not very dramatic cliff. in the first written draft i had more reaction to Mello's new look but it was just so darn LONG i said 'screw it' and cut them out.well anyway here's the update and i hope you like it.

Near actually DOES have some really fantastic expressions throughout the manga. XD I'm not sure where the idea sort of took off that he never has any expression -.^ but it seems to be pretty entrenched in the fandom.

I think, as with most of the skin-deep traits of a character, that people like to exaggerate Near's extreme calm into emotionlessness. People always take characters' traits to the extremes when portraying them in fanworks, it seems. *shrug* That's why I try to refer to the canon first and foremost while creating my own fanworks, rather than basing my views on other fans' views.
