Description Part 2 --> [link]

Snap. I think that's the quickest one my tutorials have been turned into a Daily Dev. Thanks very much. Also, thanks to people who have faved/commented/watched and to the groups that requested this dev. Much Love.

I haven't had enough time to finish this tutorial in full so I'm submitting this first part of my coloring tutorial which I had in my scraps+some new parts. To tell the truth, it makes me a little nervous to do tutorials in parts, because I do a lot of reorganizing as I do tutorials to make things seem... logical. But whatevs.

Next sections cover color perception and painting techniques which can be applied traditionally and digitally.

I hope some of you find this helpful.

With Love,
Sasha

P.S. I'd like to make a note that while I go over typical color relationships like complementary colors, and I go over color wheels, all this should be taken only a short-hand for an easy way to pick a color palette and a way to introduce people to terms artist commonly used to define color. The most important parts are the ones about hue, purity, and value, color mixing, and gamut.

Remember that you're the artist, and you should pick the colors that appeal to you.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

I love this tutorial. I'm about to check for the second part of the tutorial, but if you haven't released it yet, I'll be looking forward to it!

...Now, I have a question...
I'm colorblind. Doing my own research, I think I could self-diagnose myself with dichromatic colorblindness? Or something like that. I have troubles with Reds and Greens most of all.
But my question: If I were colorblind, do you know how that would affect my perception of color? Or my usage of color?
Color has never been one of my strong points, and though I think I can see color just fine, I've realized that I just don't see color the same way as everyone else.
As an artist, I don't want that to be a huge obstacle...

Hey love,

If you have red-green color blindness, then you'll have a tough time distinguishing reds and greens. So, you might have a bit of trouble mixing things like skin tones and such things. You'll distinguish blues and yellows fine.

Mm, I've actually know a few color blind artists personally. One African painter told me that he would have an assistant help him when he was mixing colors. Others shift their reds and greens toward yellow or blue so that they can be more certain of their hue. There's also a method of distinguishing greens and reds by viewing red/green objects through red glass... I think the green objects don't filter well through the red glass, so they appear darker than a red object would.

You might want to not think of color blindness as an obstacle, but as something that marks your work as unique and turn it into an advantage: [link]

I hope that helps : )

BTW, I noticed that you can't make pink but if you mix pink with yellow you obtain red... This is why now I buy CMYK+W paint bottles lol.

hi, love the tutorial, glad it grabbed a front page, but like so many other tutorials you make a very crucial mistake when describing complementary colors to people, and I would have really preferred it if you stayed to the CYM color model when doing that portion, just because the representation of colors on that wheel, particularly when it comes to complementaries and the like, match up so much better, quick couple of examples:

green looks rather ugly with red or orange, at least compared to the way magenta complements it, similarly; blues are better complemented by reds then they are oranges... and all this confusion is avoided if people remember their magentas in the wheel .

sashas In reply to Rhumald [2010-11-21 16:50:00 +0000 UTC]

I covered the RBY color wheel only because it is the one which is most commonly used. I personally don't have a preference for either system of color organization. I might come back later and add a magenta-cyan-yellow version beside the red-blue-green.

I actually prefer a green and orange combination rather than magenta and green, and I like oranges an blues more than reds and blues, but all this is just personal preference.

Color wheels and color organization are nice for initial color choice, but I believe it's secondary to one's own judgment.

This was very helpful to me. Usually I can't read through a whole color theory tutorial... but for this one somehow I managed. o_O I have always been very bad at scientifically choosing colors, I usually just pick whatever comes to mind, but hopefully I will remember to refer back to this when I am thinking of my color pallets...
