Description This is a new project (personal) for me, so I thought I would share it as a tutorial. I have had a number of other DA artists express an interest in the styrofoam sculpting I do at work, so here is an in-depth view. If any steps are unclear (or if you just have questions), feel free to ask.
This section represents my starting point for the sculpture. I was actually about to toss this piece into the 'remnants' bin (we try to re-use the scraps for packaging whenever possible), when I decided to 'whittle' on it instead. It began to suggest a lizard or dragon face, and an idea was born!
I hope you enjoy!

You are welcome and thanks for the fave! Hopefully, I'll find time to get some recent work posted and finish the tutorial. I have so many "work-in-progress" photos, I may need to open another DA account strictly for the foam work. Stay tuned!

This entire DIY is getting faved!

I've done a couple of small sculptures with floral foam but this definitely makes me think I should aim for bigger and better!

Thanks for posting this

Glad to provide some inspiration. More to come. (Soon I hope) I wanted to add wings and then finish the detailing, but just keeping my day-job has proven a nearly Herculean effort lately.lol
The EPS (styrofoam) material is much less expensive than floral foam, and easier to join together (hot glue works great).
Feel free to ask questions; I'm always happy to share the tips and techniques I've picked up over the years.

...and thanks for the watch, too!

Thanks for the offer. I'm the sort that doesn't ask many questions, my stubborn nature, but should I run into issues I just cannot figure out I will do so

And I'll definitely be looking forward to the rest of the series

Ha Ha
seriously though. That's gonna be well handy in the future, I know people who are looking to make puppets and the same techniques will apply to wood too.
I've never done any kind of carving/sculpting course (multimedia's my bag) just taught myself over the years.

I'm glad you feel it will translate to other media. I hadn't thought of the woodcarving angle. I'm basically self-taught as well; I started carving bars of soap (for profit, actually) at an early age. It has only been recently that I have begun using similar techniques to shape foam.

Thanks! I'm having a bit of delay on the next section because I went a little too 'high-tech' on the next steps. I'm redoing them with procedures that are more in line with a DIY budget and toolkit.
