Description
Edit: I've got several comments of people who are wondering how they can't install their patterns. I resolved every problem and that's ALWAYS because people forget something, because if you follow every step, then it works 100% everytime ^^
If you're planning to ask me why you can't use your pattern please check this :
- your file has to be a .bmp file;
- it should have the size 512x512 px;
- it must keep transparency, for exemple a .jpeg (that turns transparency into white areas) turned into a .bmp file won't work because the transparency already has been deleted;
- your file must be in grayscale mode (a rgb file turned into black&white isn't a grayscale file! ^^)
If you follow those steps, there's not a single reason your pattern won't show!
But if you still don't succeed to install it, don't hesitate to show me your pattern in the comments and I'll tell you what's wrong ^^
If you don't know what transparency is, check this out: sta.sh/01w1mzfguufp -> sta.sh/01mw2b623lhm
Last summer, I searched how to install patterns on SAI, because I don't really like to use it with photoshop... So now, here is a tutorial on how I do this, I hope it would help
Download for full view and have fun
Edit : RGB can also be turned into Grayscale by using the Gimp (free software), just choose image -> mode -> Grayscale

You don't know what transparency is? It's like.. a picture without background ermm like this : [link] , you can see tranparency on this picture. So if you want to use your pattern, for exemple a flower, you must save your flower as .png (with the option of transparency actived) and not in .jpg because here you'll have a white background and it won't works ^^ I don't know if I explain it right.. xD
I can explain you right if I know the software you're using

Well it worked for the brushes, but I still can't add patterns. I paste them in the correct folder but it doesn't show in Sai, what would be the problem?

The only thing I see is you forgot something :/ Actually it works every time ^^ Check out if the files you added are 512x512px, in grayscale (if the file is grey and white, but if it's set on RGV, it won't work) and are .bmp file

L1ghttAng3ll In reply to Sayuki-Art [2012-02-03 20:29:05 +0000 UTC]
There in .bmp and 512x512px. Maybe it is the grayscale, I use Gimp to make it gray. Image -> mode-> grayshades, is this correct?

Question: The patterns you show in this tutorial has multiple colors, once turned into gray-scale these colors will no long appear and can not be colored individually right? By the way awesome tutorial. I love people like you who take the time to relieve some of a digital artists burdens by creating a tutorial like this my drawing will now have more life.

Sayuki-Art In reply to ferandy8 [2012-01-21 09:35:17 +0000 UTC]
of course the patterns will loose the colors they originally have, but that don't means that they will be black forever ^^ you can color them by changing the color of your brush just lock the opacity and you can color it as you want, that's freedom xD
And if you really want to keep the colors of the pattern, just file the area with a color (or white if you only want the pattern) and copy/paste the pattern on it in a clip layer
Hope it helped you ^^

It has half way cause unfortunately I can't create my own pattern or get a random design online and turn it into a pattern. it just functions as a regular brush. But the name shows up and everything just no pattern. But on the bright side I can download pattern on deviant art and install them to sai thank you so much . However if you have a solution to the first problem please do tell me. Or tell me anything that can help me get the pattern I drew by myself or a random design from online.

Sayuki-Art In reply to ferandy8 [2012-01-22 19:15:53 +0000 UTC]
Actually you can create your own pattern, just follow the steps ^^ After you drew it on SAI, save it as a png (for keeping transparency). Don't forget that your pattern will appear in black so don't draw something colorful ^^
Open it with the Gimp or with photoshop, and turn it into grayscale, then save it as a bitmap file. Follow the next steps of the tutorial and your pattern will work Keep in mind that if the original pattern doesn't have transparency (like a jpeg for exemple) you won't be able to use it, so be careful to save it as a png file 32bpp (if you use sai).

you're welcome
(by the way you can draw it in cs4, but be careful to use a transparent backround, to turn it into grayscale and to save it as bitmap^^)
