Love it how you quote both Voltaire and Einstein, both of whom were known to be Christians.

Supposed to be Christians and both of them were not.

Atheists seem to love quotes so here's a little from Einstein:

"The longing for guidance, for love and succor, provides the stimulus for the growth of a social or moral conception of God. This is the God of Providence, who protects, decides, rewards and punishes. This is the God who, according to man's widening horizon, loves and provides for the life of the race, or of mankind, or who even loves life itself. He is the comforter in unhappiness and in unsatisfied longing, the protector of the souls of the dead. This is the social or moral idea of God."

"How can cosmic religious feeling be communicated from one person to another, if it can give rise to no definite notion of a God and no theology? In my view, it is the most important function of art and science to awaken this feeling and keep it alive in those who are receptive to it."

"I maintain that the cosmic religious feeling is the strongest and noblest motive for scientific research."

Call them what you will, these seem to be in line with what I percieved as a Christian worlview, and with the chief principles of christianity. But of course you will disagree with me, because you have ideas of christianity set firmly in stone, and you will insist that they alone are correct, and anyone claiming othervise is either lying or is a blind sheep who refuses to see the truth.

And here's a little something from Voltaire

"'If God did not exist, he would have to be invented.' But all nature cries aloud that he does exist: that there is a supreme intelligence, an immense power, an admirable order, and everything teaches us our own dependence on it."

"I die adoring God, loving my friends, not hating my enemies, and detesting superstition."

This isn't even as ambiguous as the Einstein quotes were.

Also I would like to point out that the quote you atributed to Voltaire actually comes from Baron d'Holbach. He is a prominent figure of atheism and enlightenment. It's a real shame you made a mistake such as mistatributing his words. If I were an atheists, I would be very dissappointed in you.

Now you made me feel bad about my misquote. Also I'm very sorry that with all the internet in your disposal you can't find the correct quotes from both of them stating that they don't believe in God. Anyway, claiming people to prove a point isn't my style. That's what other people do because they feel insecure. I just used some random quotes to lead people in a point. A point which apparently you missed and most possibly you'll never find.

Anyway, no hard feelings and thank you for taking the time to comment

"Also I'm very sorry that with all the internet in your disposal you can't find the correct quotes from both of them stating that they don't believe in God."

Feel free to quote them then. Though after obvious evidence for Voltaire, I find it very hard to believe that he also stated the exact opposite of those statements. And even if he did, what makes that statement any more valid than what I referred to?

The point that atheism is superior to all religions?

That was a very obvious point to miss. Still, you never answered my question. Where are the quotes from Einstein and Voltaire in which they claim they don't believe in God?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sc1r0n In reply to BTIsaac [2012-04-27 16:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Atheism is not superior to anything, it isn't even a thing. It's just a world that describes an idea. You needed an answer? Sorry, I thought that the two used in the deviation where enough.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BTIsaac In reply to Sc1r0n [2012-04-27 20:59:46 +0000 UTC]

No, they don't prove anything. Einstein's quote does not even mention the existence of God, and as I said, the quote from Voltaire wasn't even from him. On the other hand, I gave you at least two quotes each wherein they clearly declare that they DO in fact believe in a God. If you are unable to back up your words, or even make a point, any point at all, then this discussion is not worth continuing.

Sc1r0n In reply to BTIsaac [2012-04-28 05:20:57 +0000 UTC]

Back up my words? Buddy, I'm not the one trying to claim people into a religion like it's worth something. I couldn't care if they were Satanists. Also, since you're strong on the backing up your words theme, let's see you backing up the existance of this sky daddy being and then we'll move along.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BTIsaac In reply to Sc1r0n [2012-04-28 06:38:13 +0000 UTC]

There are several theological, philosofical and scientific studies discuaaing the possibility of the existance or non existence of this "sky daddy" (really, you actually believe that's a clever nickname? It was ridiculous the first time I heard someone use it), and can explain the matter much better than I can. If you won't so much as consider to at least read into them, I don't know why I should even bother trying to enlighten you.

Sc1r0n In reply to BTIsaac [2012-04-28 06:59:45 +0000 UTC]

It looks like you can't debate for yourself, you don't have your own ideas on the matter and all you can do is trying to make me look like I know nothing so you can feel good and stop talking to me. Good for you. Truth is though either way you put it,you don't have evidence for anything that you say or believe when it comes to god. All you've got is faith and faith is not proof of anything. So, go move along, feel good about yourself, there's nothing wrong about that and stop trying to play this silly game with me.It really won't work and the outcome really won't matter neither to you or me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BTIsaac In reply to Sc1r0n [2012-04-28 10:52:02 +0000 UTC]

It's not that I can't debate for myself. Maybe God exists. Maybe not. I didn't come to argue about it. I'm here to argue that two people you quoted (incorectly in one case) did in fact believe he did. You explicitly claimed that both Einstein and Voltaire said they did not believe in God, but failed to provide evidence, and quickly changed the subject when I pointed that out.

Fun facts: Pangea and the fact that the earth is a sphere moving through space are both in the Bible. And in the new testament, it says that when Jesus returns he will find some people asleep at night and others at work during the day at the same time, thus implying knowledge that the earth is a globe that experiences night and day simultaneously.

Though I will also say that the Church as an institution run by humans is ridiculously flawed (which is perfectly understandable considering humanity is far from perfect, so anything where humans have control is going to be flawed), and often in the past sought to control people and their money through the use of 'thus sayeth the Lord'. and also fought against progressive scientific thinking.

comowaz [2011-09-18 03:45:14 +0000 UTC]

I agree...and I also disagree.
organized Religion is something I am against. It's a way to make money as well as control the masses but, I believe that there is a god. I also believe there is gods as well as demons. I also believe that science and spirituality can go hand in hand.
Matter is never destroyed or created but recycled. I like to think of the soul as matter. whence your physical body is killed off your soul releases and searches for a new host...the body is like a shell for the soul to protect it from influences such as demons and other malevolent things.
As this whole cycle continues energy is used and thus entropy is in effect. soon, chaos ensues and...in theory...the energy recycles itself, reacts, and explodes as molecules crash together and matter is formed.

Anyhow, feel free to disreguard all of that because I probably sound like an idiot and most likely I don't know what the fuck i'm talking about.

i have the feeling scientists and religious people are acting and thinking in the same way: only what you firmly believe in is true - the rest does not count. any idea you cannot relate to MUST be wrong. this way there can be no God - for there is no prove of his existence. same with aliens. this is how the churches used to argue. plus, of course, that God would never allow, invent or do this or that - as if any human knows what a God would do, want or think. i am always suspicious when people come up with "absolute" truths. we just don't know if there is extraterestrial life or if we have a soul, if there is a God or how big the universe really is.
i say generally people differenciate science and wonders like that: anything that can be defined by logic is science - the rest is dismissed as magic or nonsense.

but in fact we only know that we know nothing. let's just wait and see and life as good as possible and refrain from killing others or ourselves over things we can neither know nor prove anyway. and as for logic... yes, it has brought us lots of things that make our lifes more comfortable. but the price (ecologic) is enormous. and then look what else it has brought us: destruction of nature, extermination of all kinds of animals, arms and all kinds of stuff that devastates mind and soul.

i think it takes a brain for logic and a mind for the spiritual world.

peace and greetings to all of you.

Did anyone else notice that most of these quotes were made by men?

I'm not an extreme feminist, it's just something I noticed that at least around here, there are more female believers than male, and the female ones mostly take it more seriously.

And then of course most famous scientists are men. Nice collection of quotes.

Good quotes, all i want to say is that you don't have to pick one. Logic OR religion. I have faith because i feel it takes less faith to believe in a God then it does to believe all is accidental. But much of the religious population is close minded and brain-washed sadly...

But anyway. Yay good meaning!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

WriterOfBooks [2011-07-08 21:06:38 +0000 UTC]

Except some atheist scientists don't seem to use logic.

Once, some evolutionist scientists found a tooth. Using advanced technology, they recreated a jaw around that tooth, and a skull around the jaw, and an entire body around the skull, and discovered the tooth to be that of a missing link between humans and apes. Everyone applauded their efforts...

until they realized that it was a pig's tooth.

And in two different cases, PhD's have tried to disprove Christianity, one of which is Lee Strobel, who now writes the Case for Christ books and is a devout Christian. The other also wrote a Christian book.

I'm not saying that all evolutionists are dumb idiots who will do anything to prove evolution exists, and I'm also not saying that all Christians are the smartest people in the world. I'm just saying that sometimes people are morons, on both sides of the argument.
