UPDATE (1/4/2017) BECAUSE PEOPLE KEEP ASKING THE SAME THING A LOTYOU HAVE TO RUN EITHER THE .JAR OR .BAT FILES ON WINDOWS 8/10 WHEN LAUNCHING SHIMEJI. DON'T TRY TO RUN THE .EXE FILE.
IF THEY WON'T OPEN, DOWNLOAD THIS: drive.google.com/open?id=0B0vF… BECAUSE YOUR PROBLEM IS MOST LIKELY HAVING THE WRONG VERSION OF JAVA.
UNZIP THIS FOLDER AND PUT THE JRE6 FOLDER IN LOCAL DISK (C) > PROGRAM FILES X86 > JAVA. MAKE SURE THAT WHEN OPENING THE JRE6 FOLDER YOU SEE "BIN", AND NOT ANOTHER "JRE6". IF YOU SEE THE LATTER, MOVE THE FOLDER INSIDE TO THE JAVA FOLDER INSTEAD BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PATH OR IT WON'T LAUNCH.

I TOOK ALL OF THE SHIT OUT OF THE TUTORIAL, UPDATED THE WRITING AND MADE IT MORE RELEVANT. GOD DAMN I WAS CRINGY A YEAR AGO. I'M SORRY FOR THE OLD TUTORIAL.

It's okay however I did find a chibi base for the Shimeji but it looks like it was done in MS Paint which is a big no for any kind of animation. So, I'm going to re-make the Shimeji for Sai use only.
Want me to ask the original base maker if I can re-upload it for Sai? I'll credit them as always. That way others can use it.

unfortunately, none of my customisables or tutorials can be applied to an ipad. unless you somehow figure out how to run windows through it. sorry about that.

Try FireAlpaca. Not sure how good it is but I believe it has the same features as SAI does. And I'm pretty sure it's for Mac.

If I delete a few of the images, would the actual shimeji itself be affected?

Yes, it would either not be able to open or would turn invisible on random
However in one of the folders, there's two files that you can edit in notepad (I can't remember what they are, but they're easy to find) that contain a list of things the shimeji can do. If you find the commands relating to the deleted images and remove them, it should be able to function properly without them in place.

Because MS Paint has no transparency support and is generally an awful program to use for things that would require some form of tracing.

Really it doesn't matter which program you use, as long as you know how to use it along with the techniques that may develop and complete the project.

As I said in the tutorial, you need a graphics program that can export transparent images. Not all programs can do this so in theory it does matter. I recommended SAI because most people use it and if anyone encounters issues while making shimejis through that I can help.

Well I have seen that it is possible to convert that non-transparent background in the image to a transparent one - only it's less convenient. Technically anything is possible.

When you go to save a .png image, you should have a box come up, with two options, 24bpp and 32bpp. Click 32bpp. If you don't have that, you'll need a newer version of SAI.
