I have an image that's not symmetrical, so when it flips for say walking in the other direction, it looks awkward. How do I fix this?

You can't do this on Paint. I'd suggest Paint Tool SAI 1.1.0 for making Shimejis. (You need a program like that because the background can't be white, it has to be transparent). As for drawing your own shimeji on top, you CAN NOT erase certain parts of the character and recolour it. That's called art thieving. You make a layer over the existing drawing, turn the transparency of the original art down a little, and use it as a basic guideline for size and position. You should be able to find some tutorials to help if you need it.

hi there, i drew a character using SAI tool. and after transfer to to Photoshop to use transparent, i saw those "dirts" around it, as in SAI tool it shows as clean. i tried to erase all in each layer, but seems cant removed. wad's the problem ?? TwT i tried n tried again but still wont gone

Unfortunetly the Shimeji you used as a base is the cause of this 99.9% of the time. Try using a different program, such as RealWorld Paint to fix it, but you might just have to download a new, "clean" Shimeji and copy your files onto that.

I had the same problem, do you have Photoshop or Photoshop elements? I've tried removing in SAI but it could not find a way so I ended up using the magic eraser tool in Photoshop, that got rid of most of it

Hey, so I've downloaded some shimejis, but whenever I try to open them, I always get this popup about java in Japanese. Even after I download Java, it still pops up. I'd really like to make my own, but I think that this will get in the way. Any ideas what to do? Please and thank you for your help.

Hi. I don't know whether you've resolved your problem already or not so I'll help anyway. YOU NEED JAVA 6. NOTHING NEWER THAN THAT. Find a link somewhere on the internet that will not update your Java but downgrade it to 6. You can try this one: [link]
Should be working now!

Remixu In reply to Kittykawaiix3 [2012-08-17 02:28:03 +0000 UTC]
Well it sounds like you're having a problem with Java itself.
You might not have an updated Java, or maybe it's just not working right at the moment.
I would suggest restarting your computer and trying it again.
If that doesn't seem to help, screen cap the files you have in your Shimeji folder and I'll see if you might be missing some files or whatnot.

I like this turotial; it's simple, yet it tells you everything you need to know. However I'm planning to make my own shimeji and I don't want any animation for it. Also, I can't really find an existing shimeji to use as a reference.
Any tips??

Remixu In reply to lenpai [2012-08-06 18:35:21 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure I understand when you say 'no animation'.
Do you mean you don't want walking, crawling, climbing animations for the shimeji?
If that's so, all you need to do is copy/paste the same frame over onto the next ones.
If you're having a problem finding a reference you can find plenty of Shimeji's in one of these groups;

Those are ghost pixels, and they happen by bad erasing. Just keep trying to erase them and eventually they'll go away

SiroOni In reply to Falljoydelux [2012-06-30 03:01:23 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so much I noticed I was using the brush tool instead of the pencil, so that might have been it. Is there a way to see them?
π: 0 β©: 1
Falljoydelux In reply to SiroOni [2012-06-30 03:16:44 +0000 UTC]
Well, go into your program that you use and add a layer underneigth everything. Fill that layer with a dark color and you'll probably be able to see them.

Do you think you could help me with shimeji?
I have the img files but I don't know how to actually run the shimeji app.
I've tried using old shimeji files that actually work and replaced the img files with the new ones but that doesn't work either < n>
I've been trying to figure out how to get it to work D:

Okay, I have a question- and maybe It's just me being a total dumbass.
But whe I try to run the shimeji, like to see how it works so far, I get an error saying "Failed to load configuration file. See log for details."
What do I do?

Remixu In reply to Sand-dragon1 [2012-04-15 00:00:59 +0000 UTC]
If you've gotten this message there's a multitude of things that may be wrong.
Maybe a line of coding in the software is gone or wrong, If you were messing around with the coding I would say get another shimeji that you know works and use it as a control. Copy and paste that shimeji's coding onto the one you were working on and see if that fixes it.
Another thing that might have gone wrong is if you changed the file names of the images, resized them, or put them in the wrong folder.

Sand-dragon1 In reply to Remixu [2012-04-15 01:11:12 +0000 UTC]
I didn't do anything with the coding ;^;
But I'll try that just to be sure.
I don't think I changed/resized them..

Thank for making this tutorial
But.. I have some question.. D:
What program did you use and what brush (size)?
I'm a photoshop user and if I use the normal brush or the pencil with a size of 1 or 2 pixel, the lines look crappy. They are too pixelated, too big or too blurry.. and I always have those white dots around the character.. >xc
π: 0 β©: 1
Remixu In reply to xXAkilaXx [2012-02-07 00:55:13 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
And as for the question, to actually DRAW THE FRAMES for the Shimeji I tend to do them in SAI. The lines are bold, sharp, and easy to color. Using Photoshop to do the frames is also fine, but you have to be careful to use black to line and then not to color outside of the lines.
The white dots around the character usually mean there was a bit of color outside.

FlameDragoon5 [2012-01-24 06:53:07 +0000 UTC]
how do you keep from getting the black background when the the character faces the other direction when you only have images that face one way?
π: 0 β©: 1
Remixu In reply to FlameDragoon5 [2012-01-26 21:59:32 +0000 UTC]
The program itself will make the frames face the other way. All you need to do is make one frame facing one way, and it'll flip flop the picture if necessary. If you're having a black background, that means that you didn't save the picture with transparency on. If the picture isn't a PNG file it cannot be transparent.

This was so helpful :3 I only have one question though, after you make the frames how do you get it all together...
π: 0 β©: 1
Remixu In reply to MaiShark [2012-01-07 05:03:01 +0000 UTC]
Well actually, as I demonstrated in the tutorial, it's a better idea to just draw over the already existing frame files. But if you've already made frames, then you would have to rename each the correct name and put them in the frame folder.
π: 0 β©: 1
MaiShark In reply to Remixu [2012-01-07 05:15:51 +0000 UTC]
Oh, sorry I did draw over already existing frames. I saved them to a different file as to keep the one I used as a base still useable for the one it's from, it still has the same name (The one I drew over the original. I guess what I was meaning is, after all of the frames are done, how does it get the programing with them... Wow, I'm confusing my self with this...
π: 0 β©: 1
Remixu In reply to MaiShark [2012-01-07 05:25:29 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... Well If I'm reading this correctly, you've drawn over all the correct frames with the correct poses, right?
Then you should only have to make a copy of the folder files: Conf & Lib. Then copy the two files titled 'Shimeji'. ( So pretty much make copies of everything except the folder with the frames in it ) When you have copied those files & folders, make a new folder to put all those in. Then you make one last folder (Inside the new folder, not the copied ones ), name it img and place all the frame files in there. If I am right your Shimeji should work just fine. Please, contact me if it doesn't.

If I were to try and draw an animal shimeji, and kept the "pose" the same per frame, but generally redrew it, what should I consider while doing so? Or will it not work at all?

Dewdropmon [2011-10-03 13:56:03 +0000 UTC]
If I could draw on the computer, I'd make a shimeji of my own. Unfortunately, my computor drawing skills are nonexistant.
