I do believe you have succeeded!
The primary shift I'm seeing here is that you went from black shadows to very deep purples and opaque blues. That was an excellent choice! Using the less uniform coloration in your shadows, especially in the fog around the houses, allows the background and foreground to get along with each other much better. They no longer feel like two separate entities.
The cat by the child was a nice change (and I love the addition of the butterfly). The new cat seems more alive and fluid and less symbolic than the first one. To be honest, the first cat didn't bother me all that much. But seeing what you've done with it now makes me think you've made an excellent choice there.
This is still a strange, beautiful, peaceful yet somehow slightly haunting piece. This is some seriously good work! You've captured here exactly what you were going for with the first image and it is wonderful.

I'm really glad you like it better now. Thank you very much for letting me know

I thought about why it looks so strange and haunted but could not figure it out but now it occured to me that it would maybe help to put lights in the houses. I simply forgot them totally haha.

Lights in the houses would make it less haunting, since then we'd know there's someone else out there other than the kid and the cats. But, honestly, I like it how it is. That little bit of haunting gives the piece its uniqueness!

Wow! The edits you made were really nice touches! I didn't think this could get any better but the cat's pose in this edit looks so much more fluid! And I like the addition of the butterfly and the smoke! Now comparing this one to the older version I think this is much better (which I didn't originally think was likely!).
Great job again!! (and thanks for the mention btw )

Wow, the cat's pose changed quite radically! Is the butterfly a new addition? It might be good to make the wings a bit transparent because I suspect that they're thin enough to let through some of the sunlight.

To admin the cat is not drawn by msyself. I just used a cat silhouette stock photo and changed only the buttterfly a bit. I could have just used it as reference and copied it but I was quite lazy :-/. I think it just fits well into the piece. Maybe it's just a bit too large.
But good idea with the sunlight shining through

Ah, I see. The positioning of the butterfly above the horizon can make it seem like it's further away than it actually is, which can, in turn, lead into it being interpreted as larger than butterflies usually are. I think placing the butterfly directly in the line of sight of the cat might help it be more readable in terms of location and size, and maybe making the lower wing overlap the horizon. Sorry if this is getting too pushy. I'm just giving ideas of what's possible, I understand if you want to keep it simple.

Here's a quick edit. Disclaimer, there's a lot of pixelation around the butterfly, try to ignore that.

Scharle, love this piece. Encapsulates the magic of travel   and the magic of home at the same time for me.  Can I use it on my blog and credit and link it back to your site here?
