Description
Thread on fabric, approx. 9" x 12".This image is the second completed work in a series on female sexuality. (See my deviation "Anatomy Lesson" [link] )
The image is based on the diagrams on the instructions you find in every box of Tampax. Just why do they need instructions? Did you have to read the instructions, or did your mom tell you what to do?

I agree with the comment made earlier about its intimacy.
Intimacy is a concept I struggle with because I can speak very easily about things that many people deem intimate, something that should exist only between two close friends. And being naked is about the most unexposing thing I can do. Sex falls under that as well.
I've found for me it has a lot to do with weakness or things that might be perceived as ugly. Having to tote around tampons and/or pads once a week every month hasn't been part of that, however I know for many females (and males) it is. My friend Chas started teasing me because when I needed to change my tampon I took it out of my bag and held it in my hand where everyone could see it instead of hiding it or something. "Why didn't you just take your bag?"
What is it about the female body that still seems so underexplored? It seems like the same concepts are being shared/exposed while other things... like the process and transformation of pregnancy beyond growing in size. Menstration. And why is masturbation reserved for men's magazines and porno? Those things are sort of treated as "inappropriate" or little secrets of female existence.
As I'm getting older I'm trying to understand more about womanhood. The things is, Cosmo lied to us. So did Lifetime. And the more I sit and think about it.. or try to sketch my thoughts... the more it seems like womanhood is something deep inside of you. Something almost spiritual. But I don't believe it has to be fragile or silent.
I feel like I'm rambling...
Back to some kind of point - I really love this piece and I think that the colour choices, the pose, and the medium itself really push not only aesthetic appreciation, but also consideration of the concept and what it means to us individually.

All I can say is that I wholeheartedly agree, you've just said it better than I could have. I've always been the girl that, though unafraid of her own sexuality, or talking about sexual things, is still secretly caught being ashamed about whether or not I have an orgasm or having to change a tampon. The way young women grow up is a strange thing that is indeed, largely unexplored.
As to the image, once again, I agree with what thestrand has said. very nice work.

Thanks for your fantastic comments - I love to get people rambling! That's really what this is all about. I'll try to get the rest of the series finished soon.
Marlene Dumas rocks.

actually i needed the instructions. it took me 4 years to realize that the applicator doesnt go in to. and my mom never said shit. i know this is probbaly way too much information. but better to have instructions and not need them then need em and not have em.

Thanks for sharing, honest! In part, this piece is about the breakdown of communications between mothers and daughters. The lost tradition of passing on feminine knowledge...

No, it's all by hand. Hand-stitching is part of my concept for the series. Once I had the sketch transfered to fabric, the stitching on this one probably took 8-10 hours.
