Description
Photographed at my friend Lisa's house [link] - this is the real-world inspiration for Caterpie. The "eyes" are completely false, and may fool birds into seeing a tiny snake instead of a tasty caterpillar. The real eyes, of course, would be barely visible dots on its real head, the grey part at the very end.These caterpillars also have a Y-shaped orange horn (like Caterpie's) that they can extend from a slit behind their head, resembling a snake's tongue. I've only gotten one to do this, and didn't have a camera. The horn not only looks scary to predators, but SMELLS!
Sassafras and Spicebrush are the -ONLY- two plants these caterpillars will eat. A majority of butterflies are very particular like this, but most people don't realize it when they clear their yard of every "unwanted" plant. If you want to see more butterflies and caterpillars, let more native vegetation grow; even if they call them "weeds."

So that 's what that tiny mouth of Caterpie's is...
(Also, I gotta say, excellent photo.)

It's awesome! It's a pity we don't get a lot of interesting terrestrial insects here where I live. :/

You're so lucky you see these kinds of animals and bugs around, in my area I never see caterpillars anymore, and we used to be known for having tons of monarch butterflies. These days, I haven't seen a single monarch all summer ; o ;

I only get to see them when I visit Maryland where I grew up, where I live in Florida there's VERY few butterflies, or any interesting insects really :/

Ah
At least in Florida you have the beach. With tidepools. I like to poke the anemones :3

Eeeuugh I hate beaches when there's lots of people.
Then again I don't care for beaches. Sand drives me nuts, lol.

Same, I feel like there's nothing to do there and I feel utterly gross; I'd rather a dark, damp forest.

I completely agree. I'd rather have a nice, chilly forest than the burning light of the Daystar!
