Description After my 4 year hiatus in 2007, I've been posting a Halloween/costume inspired picture each year around this time, so here's 2015! Well, sort of. I actually drew this as a practice sketch doodle for fire, lightning, and lighting in 2013...I just slapped on my signature and added the fog this year and ding! Laziest, quickest Halloween piece so far! XD Looks like here, Courage is in for quite a few visitors on Halloween huh?

Courage the Cowardly Dog was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. The first episode I had watched was the King Ramses one. What an impression that left! It's not so scary now, especially when viewed through a small video player on a computer, but when you're 9 and watching it alone at night on a big TV with surround sound, that episode was quite chilling! Retuuuuurrnn the slaaaab! Or suffer my cuurssee!

Happy Halloween! Does anyone have any fun plans this year for the holiday?

Here. Have some more comments! This one is gonna cost you extra though! Shipping and handling is not included. I think it's funny we've talked about this show (and maybe this piece) a lot over the years, but this is the first actual piece I've seen from this show right? I'm probably wrong with my demantia, but we'll say I'm right for now. I'm always right anyhow!
For bing two years old, this has a lot of nice lighting effects. I mean, wait... Ewww! I shouldn't compliment you so much right? Right? Am I getting pillow bagged?

Nuh uh! Shipping and handling is free! It said so in the fine print! And since this is the internet, we know it is true!

And correct! This is indeed the first actual piece from the show, your demantia has not kicked in yet. What a manmanmanmanman! I'm glad I was able to use such old practice for this year's Halloweenies piece. I didn't think I was ever going to do anything with it. Now you are going to get pillow bagged for safe storage so I can retrieve all the compliments I want! I am going to count all the compliments and sort them and there shan't be any cabins! The car will overflow with compliments, and none of them will melt!

THIS SHOW! Right in my childhood!
All those days watching Courage only to be scared to death by Ramses and all the other freaky things. I remember that the episode about Freaky Fred and the one about the cursed matress really spooked me when I was a kid. XD But still I had to watch it, was too excited to stop, lol
Great job on the composition here, you really captured that creepy essence that this show was all about. Great great job on the fire, lightning and choice of colours, looks great!

I love this show! After uploading this, I went ahead and rewatched a few episodes (procrastination for work, hooray!). It's funny how some things that were scary before aren't scary now, but then some things I didn't think much of before I now find is actually rather creepy once you think about it! There was an episode where Muriel wanted to join a quilting club, and ended up getting her soul sewed into a quilt. I feel like if that episode was live action with modern day special effects, it would be really frightening! I agree, despite a lot of situations being completely nonsensical, it was an exciting and well made show for its time. It had some darker themes but still remained very kid-friendly! Oh Freaky Fred, what a smile he had haha! I really liked how everything rhymed as he narrated it. That said, I certainly I hope I don't have a nephew like that...XD

And thanks! I hadn't planned on uploading this practice, so it sat in my computer for 2 years, but when you're low on time and need that annual Halloween submission, it'll do! XD

Oh yeah! Funny how some episodes seem scarier once you understadnt the context much more clearly as an adult, haha.
Even though most episodes were quite silly when you rewatch them as an adult, lol. I know right? That was what made it for me, the voice and the fact that Fred Narrated the episode. Send chills down my spine as a kid, haha.

Oh man, well I'm glad you got back to it, haha.

Haha definitely! There's a lot of things that go over our head as kids. When I rewatched some animes a few years ago, I realized, "Wow! A lot of this is actually really inappropriate! How wonderful it is to be a naive child where it just breezes over!" XD And yes, Fred was a great narrator and set the mood well. He didn't seem to have any remorse, and just kept going at it with his singsong rhymes!

Haha, I bet that for sure! What animes did you watch as a kid?

If we loosely define kid as up till around 12 years old, it would be Sailor Moon (of course ), Tonde Burin, and Dragonball Z. A bit of Pokemon too if that counts haha! Until I went to middle/high school, I don't think I really knew what anime was, but once I did, I definitely watched a lot more, from silly gag animes like Kyouran Kazoku Nikki to horror mystery ones like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Then I got to college and graduate school and suddenly have no time for any of that... (Manga though, I still try to keep up with!) Still I do think quite fondly of my anime days, and I really like the art style! The animation quality has really gone through the roof since the 1990s, and a lot of the fight scenes are just absolutely stunning. It's probably one of the few things that makes me want to exercise haha! What about you? What animes did you watch as a kid, and did that change in high school or later?

Wow, you really had quite a few favorites, I like that! I remember sailor moon aswell, I never watched it a lot but it was always on tv in the morning, haha. XD
That gag anime and horror mystery one I've never heard about? Care to tell me a bit what they're all about? ^^
I know right? A lot of anime and manga have very beauitiful visuals. I've watched quite a few of the studio ghibli movies, and the visuals and soundtracks are simply stunning in those movies!

Hmm, the anime I watched the most as a kid was definitely pokemon, I loved it so much as a kid, and I would record all the episodes on VHS, haha. I still have them lying around somewhere. It was the only anime series I really followed as a kid. I also watched quite a bit of Digimon when that started. I think those two are the big ones of my childhood. Can't say I've been watching a lot of anime or manga when I grew up, except some of the studio ghibli movies.
Oh, I just remembered! I watched Yu-Gi-Oh with my little brother aswell, even if I didn't follow it fanatically, haha. I will never forget "heart of the cards", that phrase is so classic. XD

Agreed! Even the older Studio Ghibli movies still have absolutely gorgeous visuals! While the older ones have animations that definitely look aged compared to the newer ones, they still hold up remarkably well, and the still backgrounds are stunning as usual. The music of course is just classic and beautiful! Have you seen the Ghibli x Zelda trailer that a fan made? It's amazing how people can take the Studio Ghibli style and apply that to various iconic places in the Zelda universe. If it were a real movie, I'd love to see it, if only for the eye candy and nostalgia combined! XD

Kyouran Kazoku Nikki was an anime (and manga, though I don't think the scanlation team ever finished it) about a destined child of the god of destruction who would bring about the end of the world. As such, the government initiated "Operation Cozy Family," where children who have an identified gene that links them to the god of destruction would be put together in a caring family, and learn about love and hope that the child wouldn't destroy the world after learning about all the great things in life. It's a ridiculous gag anime and they parody a lot of situations, like a zombie apocalypse situation in which there were indestructible stuffed animals smothering everyone with hugs, or an effort to trap Santa (under the belief that he is unfair and does not give presents to all the good children) shows that Santa is extremely muscular with DBZ-like powers. It's filled with nonsense, but has likable characters and a fun, overarching story to tie it all together.

Meanwhile, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni consists of multiple arcs that show different perspectives of a murder mystery. In a village, it is said that every year the festival occurs, one person is killed and one person is spirited away to appease the gods. Some believe it is a supernatural event, others believe it is a group of people carrying this out. No one is allowed to leave the village, or they would die a horrible death from the curse of the gods. One arc may show the deaths were seemingly caused by one girl, but another arc will show that it was her identical twin in the situation, and another will show that both are innocent and they are manipulated by an entirely outside source, then another will show even that outside source was misled and perhaps the gods really do exist. While the second season of this anime left much to be desired, the first left me at the edge of my seat, waiting to learn more about the different sides of this mystery!

"Heart of the cards!" So iconic! It seemed to work so well in Yu-Gi-Oh, but admittedly every time he said that, I couldn't help but think about how if believing something like that, plus a bit of skill, was all that was needed to win, then casinos would all be out of business! XD While I also never followed the show fanatically (too many deus-ex-machina type of things in each episode), I did think it had an interesting concept and some of the cards had some pretty cool designs. I liked the first couple volumes of the manga a lot though, as they were completely different from the anime and very creative with the games played!

Courage the cowardly dog reply

I agree, the soundtracks and attention to details in those movies are incredible!
No, I haven't seen that Zelda trailer, do you have a link for it?
I would totally see that aswell though! Would be really cool!

Hahaha! That one about the child of the god of destruction made me laugh so hard! So instead of learning not to bring about the end of the world, he does it in a cuddly and cute apocalyptic way. XD

Oh wow, such detective stories are really cool! I love those, kinda reminds me of a Phoenix Wright game. You must've been on the edge of your seat!

Haha, I never followed that series either, but remember watching the odd episode when it was on. I think my brother saw quite a lot of it I think. :/
My brother had a lot of the cards, but we never figured out how to play it, so we just made up our own rules. XD

Here's the fan-made trailer for Zelda x Studio Ghibli! The background art is very nice and captures the Studio Ghibli look very well. It's amazing to see how fan artists are able to put their talents to use. I will say though that the animated parts themselves are significantly less detailed than the background, though it is to be expected. Great job nonetheless!

Haha, what you and your brother did with Yu-Gi-Oh cards sounds like what me and my sister did with Pokemon! We never did figure out what the rules were, or what to do with the bazillion energy cards, but it was fun making up our own game. Good times with siblings!
