Description CloudandFeather declared rainbows for Tuesday, and this is the closest thing to rainbows I could get! Fruits and shrimp! A rainbow diet!

Also I guess in honor of our half planned cruise, this was one of the appetizers we got one of the nights when we went on a cruise to Mexico on the Carnival Paradise.

Haha tell me about it! It's so much fun to use and that fuzzy background really gives it a bit of a professional feel! I took this cheese picture while I was on a cruise, and I spent every meal messing with the camera and taking too many pictures of food. The focus didn't always turn out right, so it was usually awhile before I got to eat since I wanted to take good photos! And sorry you haven't been able to find your camera, I'd imagine that's be quite inconvenient when you want to upload your crafts to share with everyone. I hope you'll find it soon!

They did have a lot of cheese in the buffet and pizza area, but I didn't really pay attention to what they were haha! I just put them on my plate and shoved them in my mouth! I only knew what these were since it was listed on the menu (which thankfully I took a picture of, and had to reference back), instead of just generic "Cheese." XD Do you have a favorite cheese?

I don't have a favorite cheese to be honest, I try and eat the most varieties, the one thing I can't stand though is blue cheese.

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2015-05-25 04:50:50 +0000 UTC]

I used to have no fondness for blue cheese, and even now, some of the stronger ones really seem like a shot of ammonia! I remember trying some blue cheese in Greece two years ago, and thinking it would be nice and mild based on the smell, I took a big bite...only to start gagging and tearing up over how strong it was! Whew, never again haha! Over the years I've learned to tolerate it, and even enjoy some of the milder ones, but it definitely isn't on the top of my list for favorites! It's got that fancy stinkiness to it that just seems to be an acquired taste.

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2015-05-25 11:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess it's all about learning to love the taste, but I don't think that will happen for me anytime soon sadly. XD

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2015-05-27 01:12:26 +0000 UTC]

Haha sometimes it is just hard convincing the palate! I know for me, bitter melon is another one that I'm going to have trouble loving...also kidneys and livers just all have this super distinct taste that bothers me. I can eat it to be polite to the host, but if I can avoid it, I definitely will!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2015-05-28 17:30:06 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I feel you there! Though I haven't personally eaten liver or kidneys, so I can't rule them out already.
But baked beans is a dish I can't stand, ever since I was a kid. I don't know why, but the taste and smell just makes me go "yuck!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2015-06-03 06:36:49 +0000 UTC]

Haha really? Wow I love baked beans (but not as a child)! It's mushy and easy to chew, with a delightful BBQ flavor! But I can definitely see how it's not for everyone. I don't know how it is in Sweden, but baked beans here have this reputation for being a fattening, cheaply made, and massively fis producing side dish. It looked like cat puke, and of course being a frequent dish in the school cafeteria where they try to cut corners as much as possible, it certainly did not make it any more appetizing! During high school though, I was able to try more authentic Mexican or Texan baked beans and I ended up adoring it. Sometimes it's way too sweet though and oddly tangy, and the smell can be overwhelming but goodness baked beans done right I could eat for breakfast every week! XD

I think liver and kidneys are an acquired taste, or need to be prepared a certain way. They just taste off to me...but maybe I also haven't had well-made liver and kidneys before. At least for intestines if they're cleaned properly, they're okay and don't taste like much. Definitely not my choice of food though! The idea is hardly pleasant, but when you're at someone's house, you just have to eat what's in front of you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2015-06-08 12:20:48 +0000 UTC]

They don't have that of a bad rep here, but they still do produce alot of "fis"
I agree, often the food in the school isn't exactly appealing, haha. I'm glad you had the opportunity to try authentic Mexican ones, what's the difference between them?

I can see why that would be an aquired taste, but it's kinda hard to turn it down if it's being offered to you, haha!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2015-06-22 04:07:58 +0000 UTC]

What kind of food is typically served in the elementary/high school cafeterias in Sweden? Here we grew up with things like chicken nuggets, chalupa, pizza, enchiladas, spaghetti, tacos, and chili with a side of fruit or small salad and milk-in-a-bag for lunch, and breakfast was stuff like cereal and breakfast burritos. As you can see, there's a lot of Mexican influence on our school meals, but I'd imagine that's not necessarily the case for other countries.

From what I understand (and I could be totally wrong!), the Texas baked beans tend to have a BBQ flavor to it, sometimes a lot of smoke flavor as well. It's also not unusual to be completely doused in cheese. A lot of Americanized Mexican food is coated in cheese, whereas if it's more authentic, the cheese should be just a bit inside and not a blanket... that said I love cheese so I am perfectly fine with this aspect! Meanwhile, Mexican baked beans rely more on various spices and herbs (varies by region) to give them a rich flavor. Then you just have plain incorrectly made beans that are too dry, watered down, too much lard if you're doing refried beans, or overcooked and squished to the point it looks like cat puke...yummy! Sadly there are quite a few restaurants, especially fast food chains, that are cutting corners and cook time so the beans come out really not tasty.

Oh, we actually have a very varied lunch menu in our schools, it can be all kinds of things from pasta bolognese, hamburgers, tacos, fried fish and so on. There's also always a vegetarian alternative and special food for people with allergies or that come from a culture where they can't eat certain kinds of foods.
Really cool that Mexico is having such an influence on your food, how come? ^^

Ok, thanks for explaning. Maybe I should try that one day, if I can find it. Though I'm not a big fan of beans usually.
Seems like you have to be quite precise with the cooking or it ends up looking really distasteful.

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2016-09-30 20:05:24 +0000 UTC]

Your school menus sound much better than ours! Especially having those vegetarian and special food options. Despite the "variety" we have, all we have is junk food basically haha! Even with healthier options, few students opt for them since there are rumors that the volunteers working in the kitchen spit in the salad and such. XD (In our high school, as part of disciplinary action, some students had to do volunteer work, and some of that was working in the school kitchen preparing food, usually the easier stuff like the salads. So it wouldn't be surprising if as "revenge," the students tampered with the food a little! Unlikely under the watchful eyes of the chefs, but you never know!)

Mexico probably has a huge influence on our food, since the bottom of California borders with Mexico, and I believe a fair portion of Southern California once belonged to Mexico. Many cities have a large Hispanic population (for example, Los Angeles has over a 50% Latino population) as well, which then leads to lots of Latino-inspired food everywhere. Yummy yummy! Though I guess for people who don't like cilantro, like my cousin, that doesn't work out well haha XD. Which countries have you noticed seem to have a large influence on Swedish cuisine? Not necessarily "authentic" Swedish food, but like just general things that people eat everyday and see everywhere?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2016-10-01 05:31:37 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it could be like that, especially if the rebellious students are put in the kitchen as a punishment. XD

Oh, that really explains it then! I didn't know there was such a large population of hispanic people, but I bet it's not easy for your cousin that doesn't like chilantro. XD

Well, asiatic food is very common, you can stores and restaurants with that on a daily basis. Also a lot of pizza places with turkish flair, or a lot of kebab from the middle east.

That's pretty neat! Pizza with a Turkish flair is one thing I don't think I've ever seen here actually, and I'd love to try that one day! What is that like? We also have a lot of Asiatic food here, though unfortunately in my new neighborhood, we seem to be pretty barren of it minus poki restaurants!

I enjoy spicy food a lot, so I guess those Turkish pizzas would be right up my alley! What amount of spice is usually perfect for you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2016-10-03 09:06:57 +0000 UTC]

Nice, I hope you have a chance to try them sometimes! Well, I like a moderate or low amount of spice, I don't find strong spices to be tasty. It overpowers every other taste and just makes the dish unpalatable to me since it burns in my throat throughout the entire meal. :/
How about you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2016-10-05 23:46:57 +0000 UTC]

For me, it depends on the spice, and usually I can tolerate a medium to medium-high amount of spice compared to others. There's a wonderfully subtle taste from the peppers that really adds to the dish! Some spices and combinations I don't care for, like spices with a lot of vinegar just make the food taste like it went bad. Sweet and spicy is another one I find weird. Spicy salsa and spicy noodle soups I love, as long as it isn't overwhelming and I can't taste the broth or ingredients any more! Like you said though, once there's too much spice in it, it just burns for everything else that goes into the mouth aside from cold drinks. Even worse I think is the next day in the bathroom, it feels like liquid fire is coming out, and it is a terrible experience to wipe! When there's that much spice in the food, it just gets unpleasant haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2016-10-06 06:38:54 +0000 UTC]

Nice, seems like you can deal with quite a larger amount of spices then I can.
I agree, if I want vinegar I prefer just a little bit, since it overpowers the dish very easily.
Haha, I have the worst time before the trip to the bathroom. My intestines get hyperactive and I think I produce more gases than a dairy cow out on pasture.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2016-10-09 00:07:15 +0000 UTC]

It was a learned taste over the years haha. My sister was really good with spicy stuff, and over the years, my tolerance and appreciation for the different tastes of spices grew as well, since we liked to share dishes. Do you have a favorite spice? How about herbs for cooking?

It does! Vinegar has a very distinct flavor that quickly overpowers many dishes. I try to avoid using vinegar when I can, though it does have its place sometimes. I think I use it the most when it comes to dying eggs though, but I suppose that doesn't count! XD

Haha I got a good laugh out of that comparison with a dairy cow! If that ever happens during a car ride, I'm sure the other passengers will have a great time! XD I've had my days like that as well- lentils is usually a pretty consistent cause for me! It's a battle of slow-release clenching should the gas attacks happen in public, but at home? Oh sweet relief, let it rip!

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2016-12-14 12:13:00 +0000 UTC]

Ah ok, I guess if you're exposed to it often you get used to spicy food. I don't know if I have a favorite spice, but the most common one that I use is "kött-grill krydda", which would translate into meat and BBQ spice. It's very frequently used here in Sweden.
Herbs can be really nice, but I often use them for special recipes only, like oven-baked chicken and such. How about you in the realm of spices and herbs?

Hahaha! Well, then at least the vinegar fills a purpose. XD

I feel your pain, if you're in public it's so hard to restrain it, since you end up with a painful bowel filled with gas. :/
Better to try and stay home after a meal like that, haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2016-12-22 03:30:36 +0000 UTC]

I haven't seen kött-grill krydda around here before, but it sounds like a versatile spice to use! My mom loves BBQ-style spices. For my favorite spices and herbs, that's a tough one! Sichuan red pepper is a nice one for soups, though anything that goes into pesto like pine nuts and basil are a bonus for me! Cumin used correctly can make things like toothpick lamb or fried rice really addicting...I suppose if I could only pick one, it might just be the classic white pepper. Good on steamed egg, noodle soup, and meat!

Haha definitely! Holding it in in public while keeping a straight face and playing it cool is a nightmare since the insides are just burning and waiting to feel sweet, molten volcanic relief!

Speaking of food, I know either in one of our comment, letter, or email chains, we talked about knackerbrod (sp? I think I'm missing a couple dots there), which I finally found yesterday! I'm snacking on it right now actually. It's surprisingly very filling despite only eating a little, maybe because it's so fibrous? And since it's so thin, it really take on the flavor of any herbs that are put on top. It is rather dry though, so I think it would have been nice with something moist on top to both add some new flavor and soften it a bit. Overall it was fun trying it and I'm glad that now I am a tiny bit more familiar with traditional Swedish cuisine! I feel like this would be a great snack for the morning, when I'm in the rush and need something quick and filling. No preparation, just pull it out of the box and munch away. Thanks for introducing it to me!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2016-12-24 11:56:47 +0000 UTC]

It's similar to BBQ spices for sure, but with its own twist!
Nice choices! Can't go worng with white pepper, and sichuan red pepper sounds really spicy!

Hahaha, you know my pain so well! XD
Yeah, and then it's time to unleash the bomb once you're all on your own, let it riiiiip!

Yeah, it's knäckebröd! Cool that you tried it out, and I'm glad you liked it! Here we often have it for breakfast or a quick meal, since it's very filling depsite its small size. But we usually don't eat them dry, we usually have butter and cheese on them, or some other topping. It would be very dry on its own, not very palatable, haha. XD
I'm glad you liked it though, and that you got to try some Swedish cuisine!

Sounds good. Except I'd never go on a cruise. It seems as though there's a high chance of the cruise sinking into the ocean, and I am NOT risking my life for a once-in-life vacation to a luxurious resort when I can just go someplace like Blue Harbor.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to SolKeldeo99 [2015-04-30 04:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Actually, traveling on a cruise ship is really safe, and there is a super rare chance of it sinking. Since the 1900s, and considering the hundreds of ships that sail every day, there have been less than 15 that sank (maybe less than 10?), most of which are only partial sinking except obviously the Titanic. It's one of my favorite ways to travel because it's so safe, and even if the ship does run into something, you have an excellent chance of surviving with modern ships (unlike a car or airplane crash, where you're probably dead no matter what). From my understanding, there's only been one capsized cruise ship since 2000, and that's because the captain made a stupid decision by changing course and sailing too close to shore to show off the boat, and ran into a rock, then took six hours before telling people to evacuate. Ugh. Obviously though as with any kind of traveling, the risk is there and people can make horrible decisions, and weather can be unpredictable. I myself am absolutely terrified of flights, even though it's one of the safest ways to travel! Just a bit of turbulence makes me feel like I lost 7 years of my life, so you can imagine that flight to HK every other year takes quite a toll on me haha!

You might be thinking of the smaller refugee, passenger, and hospital ferries, which definitely do seem to make it on the news with crashing and capsizing often. I know there was one in Hong Kong last year I think, a couple in the Mediterranean, and it seems fairly frequent in the Bahamas area as well. The mortality rate on many of those are very high.

The main concern for a cruise ship would be fires, and viruses. Fires can destroy the engine and leave you stranded for a few days until they tow your ship back or evacuate you. If one passenger is sick, they can very easily spread it to a thousand other people very quickly, so you'll see the crew constantly disinfecting everything. We were really impressed with how clean and detailed they are!

Most cruises are actually cheaper than hotels (and in the off season, it's cheaper than the cheapest motels, but includes all the fancy food and entertainment!), and less of a hassle traveling. But it's definitely not for everyone, as a lot of people hate living on ships due to the confined nature, or others just don't tolerate seasickness well. If you don't live near the ocean, the flight to get to a cruise terminal can be really costly as well (our roundtrip flight cost more than the cruise...). However, it is perfect for retirement traveling, so hopefully 50 years from now, you'll get a chance to go! I do think it's something everyone should try at least once in their life if they can, especially since it is safe and affordable compared to most travel. Cheers!
