Description Apparently glowing effects are a mystery to a lot of people,
but they're so easy! So here you go!

Apologies for the lame layout, I didn't want to use any more complex backgrounds to bring out the effects to their fullest.
Also apologies for typo's

If you're looking for more resources for drawing (ponies), check out my other tutorials:

I never use any other program but SAI, so I can't tell you how to do glow effects in PS, Gimp, etc...
(and I don't want to know either)

iRobyni In reply to puggal0504 [2016-01-11 22:21:22 +0000 UTC]

You need to have a darker colored background. Say for example you have all of the layers that were shown above, just add a solid background color (blue, brown, dark green, purple etc.) on the layer before your luminosity layers.Β

Aha! Finally... now I can try to add glow. Not done this yet. *excited*.

I don't suppose you know how to edit multiple layers at once (i.e. erase/move, for a selected area down all layers)? I've tried google, and therefore tried layer sets. I just get a message saying nothing is selected.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

secret-pony In reply to silkda [2015-06-30 08:47:31 +0000 UTC]

I don't think such an option exists, sorry
With layer sets you can only move them around or transform them, but you can't draw on a layer set.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

silkda In reply to secret-pony [2015-06-30 10:40:04 +0000 UTC]

So say, you drew and coloured and shaded (3 layers) an eye or nose about an inch too far down - there's no way to move it around? *sad face*

I guess that just means I need to improve my lineart and get it right before i even think about colouring

Also I haven't worked out how to transform a layer set. I follow the tutorials to the latter, but get "nothing selected" still.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

secret-pony In reply to silkda [2015-06-30 10:48:09 +0000 UTC]

You'd have to move the lineart and re-do the coloring and shading for that part, I'm afraid.
Or move every layer around individually, which is equally messy

Hmm... can you show me a screenshot perhaps?
I can't really think of anything that could go wrong on the top of my head.

I restarted SAI and now I can transform a layer set. I have no idea... hehehe. Thanks for the help!

Just so you know, I used the new glowy trick to go from this:

silkda.deviantart.com/art/Harm…

To this:

silkda.deviantart.com/art/Harm…

Basically just added some light on the edges of the clothes, and some tears and random glowy balls because why not. I think it really helped, thanks!

secret-pony In reply to Taty00 [2015-03-22 13:09:04 +0000 UTC]

Can you show me an example or a screenshot?

Some tips:
- if the glow is not strong enough, work with several luminosity layers on top of each other
- use dark backgrounds, the glow will really pop out more than with light backgrounds

What settings for airbrush?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

secret-pony In reply to ReaperroseHaunted [2014-11-19 23:17:54 +0000 UTC]

Just default settings, vary transparency with how strong of a glow is needed. Β

Are you using a tablet with pen pressure?
What do your "normal" airbrush strokes look like?

Seems pretty normal, actually.Β
The color of the glow often takes over the color of the thing below it.

You can try using different colors, one's more covering than the other.
Or you can do the glowy bits only at the edges by erasing the inside of the glow (set the airbrush tool to transparant).Β
