secret-pony β€” Tutorial: Coloring inside lines (layer clipping)

Description This is probably the question I receive most: "How come you never color outside your lines?"
Well... here's my secret...

There are other (simpler) ways, e.g. using 'preserve opacity', but this is just the method I use and prefer. Why? Because this way, if you spot you made a mistake somewhere when you're done with your drawing, you can easily navigate to the layer where you made your mistake and fix it without any risk of accidentally messing up other parts of your drawing.

Don't ask me how it's done in Photoshop, Ilustrator, GIMP... Because I don't know. I have never used any other program but SAI.

If you're looking for more resources for drawing (ponies), check out my other tutorials .

This was really helpful, thank you! I'd just like to ask, how do i separate parts of the drawing into layers on lineart? I followed your steps and have my image, but i now want to divide the parts into layers, like a layer with just hair, one with jusy eyes, etc. However im not sure how to split up my lineart like that, or select different areas with the magic wand to do that..

secret-pony In reply to LubbaOtaku [2016-01-13 21:09:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm afraid you can't easily split up your lineart into layers.
It's easiest if you draw each part on a separate layer from the start.
If need be, you can try to select certain areas with the selection tools: selection rectangle and the lasso (next to the magic wand) and/or with the selection brushes (SelBrush and Deselect, in your assortment of brushes) and cut/paste them onto new layers.
The magic wand is probably not going to be of much use for you in this case. It selects all things that are "the same" (same color or same transparancy), but lineart is completely 100% the same (all black lines, usually).

I'm sorry but, what do you mean by "make a new layer over the color layer"? Is "color layer" referring to the lineart layer or the layer I filled up with color? The entire last bit kind of confuses me and I do everything perfectly up until that point. Any help would be appreciated. ; ;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

secret-pony In reply to kiokota [2015-09-04 11:50:51 +0000 UTC]

The layer filled with color.

If layer A is clipped onto layer B, you can only draw on layer A in the area's where you have drawn something on layer B.
Just try it out and mess around with it for a bit, it's easier to see it than to explain it.

I tried this, and everything went well until I was to remove the area outside of the lineart. It wonΒ΄t let me use the cut tool. IΒ΄ve tried doing it both as you wrote and manually. I have the trial version - could that be an explanation? Otherwise, what could?

Edit: Nevermind, I found the problem.

I'm so confused...
When Ive done the coloring for my base layer, create another layer above it, clip it to the base, and drew on it, it went outside the base.
But when I do the little "circle-squiggly line" test shown above on separate layers, it works.

I don't understand why it doesn't work for my base... :_:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Piccolo-fan24 In reply to Piccolo-fan24 [2015-04-06 18:59:17 +0000 UTC]

I think it may be because the white outside my base color is not transparent...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Piccolo-fan24 In reply to Piccolo-fan24 [2015-04-06 19:02:27 +0000 UTC]

And when I tried to apply "Luminosity to Transparency" to my base,
It allowed the clipping to work, but then the colors were light and faded looking.
