Description Coloring your lineart is a very easy and fast way to give your drawings that finishing touch!

Image used in this tutorial:

Please don't ask me how it's done in Photoshop, Ilustrator, GIMP...
Odds are it's very similar, but I can't say for sure! IΒ have never used any other program but SAI for drawing.

If you're looking for more resources for drawing with SAI or drawing ponies in particular, check out my other tutorials and step by step processes .

How do you make your lineart look so smooth? Mine looks too rough/sharp/ whatever you wanna call it

Tinusio In reply to Rykester [2018-01-26 23:14:29 +0000 UTC]

The majority of it comes from using the stabilization tool on SAI !Β

Kinda long question.
If I use lineart that I drew traditionally, upload it to SAI, mess with hue/saturation/brightness/contrast and then do luminescence to transparency, it doesn't seem to let me use this technique. Is there a way to do this with traditional scanned linework?

is it all just one colour?

may i ask how it is an improvement over the black lineart?

can i use other colours than just pink? x3

You can use whatever colors you want! Lighter line colors can soften an image a lot. You can use one color or multiples. Check out some of your fav artwork on DA and pay close attention to the color of the lines for inspiration! ^^

LordOmegaZ In reply to secret-pony [2016-10-29 17:29:43 +0000 UTC]

multiple colours? o.o

wouldnt that ruin the image?

secret-pony In reply to LordOmegaZ [2016-10-29 17:50:09 +0000 UTC]

Ofcourse not!
Let's look at an example: xnightmelody.deviantart.com/ar…
Around the face you see the lines are brown, but at the cape it's blue. You can match your line color to your drawing, or you can use 1 color for everything.

LadyCanidae In reply to ShirogawaTeru [2017-04-23 12:29:40 +0000 UTC]

Ohgosh, THANKS! Every time I tried to use this was a failure, now I know why: I didn't use it in the lineart layer XDDΒ

SonicLuxHedgeman [2016-01-06 15:07:02 +0000 UTC]

But this will colour all the drawing with the same colour right?

I tried doing this on my Mettaton drawing (its complete btw, check out my profile if ya wanna see), but it didnt went well.
So i had to maintain the black. Thanks!

If you use the bucket tool, all your lines will be the same color.
If you use the pen tool, you can re-color your lines in different colors.

for colouring lineart without much effort I always make new layer filled completely with the colour I'm looking for, simply clipping it over the original lineart really time-saving!

There is also a nice trick when you coloring locked lineart with some airbrush-like tool with multiply mode. It's a LOT easier than coloring it with different colors (i.e. dark red color for body and dark pink for hair on Fluttershy).

Was doing it in very ... primitive way. Is there anything special about color transitions, or you just do it manually?

secret-pony In reply to Whazzam95 [2015-07-20 19:19:24 +0000 UTC]

I blur between 2 colors with the blur tool or the water tool, the lineart will become a gradient! ^^

I prefer doing a new layer above the lineart-layer, then use clipping group and draw over.

because you can easily change colours or opacity without changing the original lines. or you can use the eraser without erasing the lines. To be honest using the lineart for changing colours with preserve opacity is a little bit riskyΒ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

secret-pony In reply to JackyBunnyBun [2015-07-20 15:23:35 +0000 UTC]

They're both equal methods, though.
Where you can use the eraser on a clipped layer, you can use the color black on a locked layer to go back to the original color.Β
It's just a different approach :3Β Using the eraser on a locked layer will only color the lines white, not erase them. There's no risk at all. ^^

trick.Β

why not just using the clipping layer ?? you donΒ΄t needΒ  to selcet anything just clip it

secret-pony In reply to RainbowScreen [2015-07-20 13:29:47 +0000 UTC]

By selecting, I just meant "click on your lineart layer", not make a selection
they're both equally easy methods!Β

I didn't wanna cover both

I'm lazy

Don't judge me senpaiii

As a side note from someone who uses a very similar Program That system seems to be standard in all Vexel programs (I use Clip Studio Pro) but as I've only really seen 2 programs of this type that may be a biased opinion

I suppose it is! I have no idea where the "lock opacity" buttons are in other programs, though.
