Description
This is probably the question I receive most: "How come you never color outside your lines?"Well... here's my secret...
There are other (simpler) ways, e.g. using 'preserve opacity', but this is just the method I use and prefer. Why? Because this way, if you spot you made a mistake somewhere when you're done with your drawing, you can easily navigate to the layer where you made your mistake and fix it without any risk of accidentally messing up other parts of your drawing.
Don't ask me how it's done in Photoshop, Ilustrator, GIMP... Because I don't know. I have never used any other program but SAI.
If you're looking for more resources for drawing (ponies), check out my other tutorials .

How do you use this with multiple layers? It's not working.Β
It worked with the first layer, but I tried to follow the exact instructions with the second layer and it wants to color them both instead of just one.
*Nevermind. It shows in the tutorial but I missed that part until reading it a few times. xD

Doesn't work. When I go back to the layer I colored and use the magic wand, it selects EVERYTHING.

secret-pony In reply to Andrew13112001 [2015-03-16 17:55:39 +0000 UTC]
Did you set your lineart layer as the "selection source" (making the layer turn green in the layer menu) + set the magic wand to use the "selection source" to base its selection on?
Could you show me a screenshot? It'll be easier to see if I overlooked something.

Now it works, BUT, if I try to color something whoose outline is....Uh..it's complicated.
So I made a pig, and made him pink. But some of his ears outline is INSIDE the body, and when I color it, the outline is gone.

It does.
Make white backgrounds transparant with Layer >Β Luminance to Transparency ,
this only works for black lines on white backgrounds though.
... assuming that was the problem you were referencing to x3

The source of your selection is set to a "selection source" layer, but you didn't assign your lineart layer as the "selection source".
Go to the lineart layer and check the circle "selection source", op top of the icons of your list of layers, then try again.

Oh, didn't see a notification if you comment on your own comments.
You need to select the lineart layer (layer 2 in your example) as the selection source,
not the layer you're coloring on (layer 3).

Ah yes, I see. Your lineart is black lines on a white background, instead of black lines on a transparant background.
You can make black and white lineart transparant in SAI by going to your Layer menu and click "Luminance to transparancy".
This will make all white areas (also inside the dinosaur) turn transparant.
