I love simple renders like this. Β Nice job
The wood material on the plane, is it using a bump map or displacement?

Just a bump map, like most things in life, subtly is best

can you get the same result with just a vray studio setup? without HDRI? im pretty stuck in the whole HDRI thing

sentimentalfreak In reply to JuniorvX [2012-02-11 15:00:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you would get 99% the same result, specially if you set the environtment (8) to grey or put some big dull lights outside

hdri + one large vray light on the right hand side

I can't remember where or what it was, I had a huge collection before my hdd crashed, it's pretty much a generic grey/tunnel/underground thing with a couple of small lights. The big light is the vray light, any interior hdri would probably do if you took the colour out of it

oh okay, ill try and get some! but theres 1 thing i dont understand, is the HDRI the light source? or is it the reflections? because it seems to me that everyone using hdri images are also using extra lights, just like you have. and also the way u setup ur scene is just 2 planes and a light ? nothing fancy modelling? !

In max if you press 8 and set the hdri as the environment it will be used for lighting and reflection (VRAY) - You can however go into the vray settings (f10) and set different HDR images for reflection/lighting/refraction.
I just set it as an environment, it didn't have very bright lighting so there wasn't much contrast, shadows or any highlights so I added the large VRAY light on the right hand side.
If you want your HDR to light the scene (not just reflect) you will have to make sure GI is turned on.

aaaaaaah man thanks! ive been getting weird results.. didnt think of turning on GI! and also is fram buffer necesarry at any time? ive always been using it to composite objects in my scnene with real images but idk!

Using the vrayframe buffer? It's pretty much the same as the max one with a few extra options. It's not necessary unless you are using it to do some kind of post colour correction (gamma)

i would like to know more about the light and the HDRI used
and the render settings
if you can send me the file then it will be very kind of you

The hdri was a pretty boring grey interior. Just to fill up the gaps in reflections and lighting.
Not sure about the render settings. Probably
GI ON
lightcache+IR map (high)
adaptive DMC Anti Aliasing
1-20
no filter (untick box)
Probably exponential colour mapping with sub pixel mapping, clamp colours enabled

I don't know but the smoothness of your light is really nice I have been working with V-ray too. Could I talk to you for sometime? do you have Gmail?
