Description Alright boys and girls, have a seat, because I'm about to give you a crash course on the biology and anatomy of a Varanian, an alien race of reptilians that pride themselves as being the greatest warriors and hunters in the galaxy, and they have the biological tools to back it up. Now then, as you may have guessed by their appearance, Varanians are large, reptilian-like creatures that have evolved to become the dominant species on their home planet. While they may all be the same species, Varanians come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors depending on their location and their way of living, similar to Darwin's finches. Some are large and bulky, with armored skin that could stop a bullet, others have adapted to a marine life, with fins, webbed feet, and sleek, waterproof skin, some are even adorned with colorful feathers and are built for mountainous region. To further differentiate them, some even resemble more like snakes and turtles, rather than lizards. However, their appearance is only the tip of the iceberg. Let's take a closer look at what makes a Varanian. First and foremost, Varanians are cold-blooded, just like earth's reptiles, however, they never really had to concern themselves with cold climates on their home planet, since it was mostly tropical weather year around. This is why Voo'Han wears an a skintight thermsuit, to keep his body heated even on planets with colder temperatures. Now, if you look at the size chart on the bottom left, you'll see that varanians are quite larger than humans, with females being much larger than males. While females may be larger than males, they are fewer in number, with each clan having 2-3 females at max, with one of them being the "Moko-Kui" a title given to their queen or chief of their tribe. There are several key differences between males and females other than their size. Most males have a sort of plumage on their heads, while the females do not. In ancient times, varanians used these plumages as a way of attracting the females, the more dazzling the plumage, the better their chances. However, as they evolved, the plumage became obsolete as females became less concerned over plumages and more about a males strength and skill. Males are also far more aggressive than females, usually preferring a good show of force to solve their disputes, while females will try diplomacy first before resorting to violence, however when push comes to shove, the females are even more dangerous in a fight than males. So, when males sometimes get rowdy and the head male can't get them in the line, then the females step in to put them in their place. On the top left, you can see the skull of a varanian, which resemble your typical lizard or dinosaur skull. Varanian skulls are much denser than a human's and withstand a lot of punishment. In fact, males will often use it as a battering ram against their opponents to stun them or even knock them silly. On the right side of the image, you'll see three images, with two of them displaying more of what makes Varanians deadly hunters. Starting at image "A", you'll see a close up of their ISOs (integumentary sense organs) which allows them to pick up electrical fields in the air or in the water depending on where they are. This means that even by some miracle that a varanian can't smell you with their incredible sense of smell, they can pick up your movement caused by your muscle contractions, this feature is even stronger and has a much longer range in the water than on land, this was inspired by crocodiles and sharks that use the same set of organs to hone in on their prey. Image "B" shows the teeth of a varanian, and as you can see, they are no joke. Most varanians have curved, serrated teeth that are used to hook into their prey, and grip tightly. Once a varanian sinks his teeth in you, he's not gonna let go, and with a twist of his head, the teeth can rip and tear off flesh with ease, causing major wounds to their prey. Finally image "C" shows the varanian home planet, Drukarius. Drukarius has an ecosystem very similar to Earth's tropical forests, barren deserts, blue oceans, and teeming with life. However, there are some key differences, the obvious being that it is much larger than Earth. Also, Drukarius has three large continents, with numerous islands surrounding them. While varanians inhabit most of the areas, they mostly keep to the jungle and tropical areas, while a few inhabit the desert regions, as well as the oceans and coasts. This is the basic anatomy of a varanian, their culture can be discussed in another image, but I hope you enjoyed this brief lecture on varanians.
