Buck sipped his tea as Eudora talked animatedly about fixing up and decorating the cottage. He apologized (again!) for not being able to come along when she’d had the crowd of helpers over, but she waved it away. There had been plenty of willing paws and claws, and Buck did more than enough for her.

That was Eudora’s way, he thought. Rarely judgmental and such a kind wyngro. And she gave him credit he wasn’t comfortable giving himself. This feels good, right, he thought to himself. Comfortable. This… feels like home. He looked up, taking in Eudora’s face as she told her story-- making gestures, smiling, taking little sips of her tea. She made him feel good. About himself, about the world.
It’s her, he realized. Eudora feels like home. He hoped she didn’t notice his deep blush as it hit him. No, no! It… wouldn’t be appropriate, would it? I mean, he wasn’t that much older than she, but he WAS older. He’d reached adulthood first. Did she, could she, ever see him that way? He felt flustered.
His thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door.
“Oh!” Eudora said, popping up. “I wasn’t expecting anyone, I wonder who it is!” Smiling, she answered the door, and found to her surprise it was Rick.
“Hello there Darlin’, I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d come out this way and surprise you,” he said with a wink.
“Oh hello Rick, how nice to see you! Come in, come in, you can meet Buck!” Eudora pulled him inside and dragged him over to the kitchen table. It would be difficult to guess which of the boys was more surprised.
Eudora didn’t really notice, she was much too pleased to have them all here. “Rick, this is Buck! I finally got him to come visit with his little sweetheart Elma, remember I told you about them? He’s been here for me for most of my life,” she said, gazing over at him with something like pride shining in her eyes.

Rick kept his face neutral, but he found that he was not keen to have her look at this skinny green twerp that way. He liked the way said green twerp was looking at her even less. He certainly remembered the name Buck, it came up a lot. Buck, who already had a little brat to indulge Eudora’s desire to be a mother. Buck, who she had known most of her life, and who generally ranked very highly in her esteem. No, he did not like where this was going at all. They might not see the lay of the land here, but he did. He wasn’t ready to hand over Eudora to this athletic-looking little pretty boy. Not yet.
“Buck, this is Rick, he’s-”
“Her boyfriend,” Rick said suddenly, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her to his side.
“Oh!” Eudora squeaked in surprise, both at the sudden gesture of intimacy and at his proclamation. She blushed a deep pink. “R-Rick, I mean, we never really talked about-”
“I know, but that’s why I came by today,” he lied smoothly. “I’ve been thinking about it, and I want us to take things to the next level. Why wait?” He pulled her the rest of the way into his embrace, tipping her flushed face up to look at his, and then hugging her tight, giving the green gro A Significant Look over her shoulder. Said gro couldn’t have looked more thoroughly sucker-punched if he’d actually walked in and given him a fist to the gut. Rick almost felt sorry for the guy.
“Uh, um, I’m going to go and check on Elma real quick,” said Buck, ducking out of the kitchen at speed.

OH NOOOOOOO we dun did the thing! What are our crazy kids gonna do u guize?! I can't even stand it, Buck's little face here is like the most adorably heartbreaking face. Actually all three of these faces are giving me life right now:
