Description People all over keep asking me how I did the texture work on my Terran Marine. Now the secret is out. This tutorial shows how.

This is a tutorial similar to the one I submitted before but with updated techniques. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to comment. I will not guarantee a reply to every question or comment, though.

Additiona Notes:

You can add up to 4 bump maps in the Utility Bump Combiner for scratches, dents, etc. If you need to add even more bump maps, just put the Bump Combiner inside another Bump Combiner!

This is great How long does this take to render? Seeing it has 4-16 in samples, 4-4 Lanczos in filtering, HDRI, and Logarithmic Exposure it must be pretty heavy. I like the way you treat the materials, it seems really easy to understand and allows alot of control. Keep up the great work!

Thanks. With my medium-power computer, I rendered that shoulder pad in 2 mins. It took 20 mins to render the entire marine, though.

xD Awesome Actually it doesnt render that slow Do you make some kind of postprocessing afterwards? Like add more passes *amb occ, extra lighting, luma depth, color correction, etc*?

The only post processing I did here is sharpening the image slightly. The image came out like this as it was rendered.

Dude...you are god. It's an amazing tutorial. I'm "vRay user" but in this tutorial I can see the power of Mental Ray.

Do you use only Mental Ray or do you use both?
Where did you learn 3D? Self-taught? Maybe academy? It's possible to be a good 3D artist without your "paint skills"?

Thanks!

I've tried Vray but I fell in-love with Mental Ray because it was easier to use. I've only used Mental Ray ever since.

I'm entirely self-taught. I never went to any academy whatsoever. There are many kinds of 3d artists, each specializing in one or more things. I specialize in modeling and texturing. But some artists go along well with incredible modeling skills and let other artists with better "paint skills" handle the textures.

Easier Mental Ray? Actually I have best results the first time I tried with Vray than the first time I tried with Mental Ray. Anyway I'll try to learn Mental Ray.

Could you recommend to me some good websites to start with Mental Ray?
Thanks a bunch man.
