There was literally a light at the end of the tunnel, believe it or not. It had to be some sort of trap; a bait set up by the Ghost People to lure in the desperate. Surely that's what it was? It couldn't have been safety.
But there was nothing here. What else could it have been? The Sierra Madre was stuck in a perpetual twilight, the cloud blocking out any attempt by the sun to reach the earth. If it was the surface ahead of him, he was away from the shroud of red and black.
That prospect alone sent him scrambling forward.
