The ground was being violently eaten up by her tires, the warm summers night wind rushing in her face as the white and yellow lines of the road law blurred into one... a voice oevr her radio, spurring her on. The rush of engines in front, her prey ahead only by a few feet... this was everything she had been trained for. Tires skidding, leaving black trails across the road as she twisted and turned, her wheels locking with each embrace of the road. Sinking her weight into the tarmac below, she shot forward, like the tightly packed bullets she carried, eyes narrowing as she honed in once more on the escapee ahead.

"Take the shot!" Came the cry, one she had been waiting for with baited breath. Like a viper waiting to pounce, her coiled energy unleashed in one go, releasing a bright spark of flame, the bullet whistling through the air, striking her target with precision and accuracy. The cry was loud enough for perhaps the whole world to hear, though it was a mere whisper in Shadow's ear. Despite the wound gaping and bleeding, the car continued, the Celica taking pursuit once more. Rounding another corner, Shadow once more hugged the road tight as she sped up, pushing her engine harder and harder, the roar of her mentors engine right behind her.

"You can do this! I know you will!" Came the second call of encouragement. This was what he had trained her for... this was it. She felt the presence pull to her side, glancing over at the determined face of Leland, who nodded his hood once more in confirmation.

So there is an AU I hold rather dear to me, where Leland never died, and he became Shadow's main mentor throughout her career. I feel its one I rarely explore enough, because of the fact it's simply not canon, and my other silly aus often take me away. But there is always this one that I think of from time to time, and what it would be like if she was trained under Leland instead of Finn. Due to Leland and Finn's history, I have no doubt that Shadow would still learn a thing or two under Finn, and often hang around with them, but the training wouldn't be as much or as intense as the kind that Leland takes on.

In canon, Leland is there through most of Shadow's acadamy days, going MIA a few weeks before her graduation. Though, she only finds out after she's become an agent, that he's actually dead. She's thrown into mourning, and it takes a while for her to recover, to which Finn is there to pick up the pieces. So with this AU, she gets to explore her relationship with Leland more, seeing her as the father she didn't have, and remaining close to him all throughout her life.
