Description
Another value study, and follow up to this image here- shadowofsolace.deviantart.com/...Sorry guys, I'm not much of a writer, but I am a passionate storyteller, and I've had this image in my head for a long while.
Desperate to save their medic, Optimus and the others secure the Con's Psychic Patch in an attempt to reach him.
Optimus himself volunteers to enter Ratchets mind in the hopes of recovering his old friend, and uncovering what must be done to mend him.
Seriously, that would be such a horrible predicament. The information you desperately need, is known souly by the one individual you cannot retrieve it from.
Aka, you need your medic to fix your medic so to speak XD

Beautiful, BEAUTIFUL.Β Opti and Ratch are my two favorites because of their loyalty to each other as BFFs, which you show perfectly in this pic. Β Excellent job!

I'm no artist, but I am a worldbuilder and writer prone to long rambling brainstorms.Β This is an idea with some possibilities, especially since the psychic patch bypasses all of a bot's defenses and leaves his mind and memory totally vulnerable to scrutiny or tampering.Β No doubt Optimus would rather go swimming in the Acid Traps of Cybertron than hurt his friend and doctor, but the temptation would certainly be there.Β Ratchet has some painful memories and psychological scars, and leaving those untouched would be almost unbearable for someone as compassionate as Prime is.Β Worse if Ratchet is partially or entirely aware of the invasion but incapable of doing anything about it.
I've always figured that a medic has a self-repair system that gives new meaning to the concept of "aggressive treatment"--as in his internal repair droids have very flexible programming and will go so far as to cannibalize whatever is handy and within a droid's round-trip range to rebuild the parts.Β Medics have to have immune and recovery systems that tough because when one of them goes down, there usually isn't another fully qualified medic around to do the necessary work.Β In my headcanon, Autobots are particularly protective of their medics, and medics tend to be "homebodies" by temperament, because of the rarity of doctors and some of the tradeoffs that come with the job.Β Ratchet's got plenty of diagnostic and surgical equipment built in, but to make room for that equipment, whoever designed him had to leave off ranged weapons.Β Ratchet has his sword blades, but he's no match for fighting bots.Β He's also painted almost entirely white, which makes him easy to spot in a lot of conditions...and that can be a real liability in some situations.

Again-Your words are absolutely stunning.
You have a powerful grasp of both these bots and what they stand for.
And Calling Prime 'compassionate' is the perfect word to define him.
Thank you so very much for taking the tame to share your thoughts with me, and once more, if you ever feel the desire to write any stories along these lines, do not hesitate to link them to me.

Thank you for the compliments!Β I'm juggling some other projects, but these two images here are going to stick with me and might squeeze into the queue sooner or later.Β Looking at them has created some additional "screenshot" type pictures in my head.Β One of them is a moment from Ratchet and Raf's captivity.Β Ratchet is beat up and lying on his side but still mostly functional, and because he can still move under his own power, MECH has shackled and chained him to a fixed point on the floor.Β (They probably overdid it, too, loading Ratchet down with enough chain to keep Optimus himself from getting loose.Β Silas knows the power of psychological warfare, and making sure Ratchet can't move without reminding himself and Rafael that they are prisoners at Silas' mercy will help Silas break them both down.)Β Raf, bruised and dirty and exhausted, has fallen asleep tucked up against Ratchet's chest.Β Ratchet is doing the best he can for the kid--he's curled himself around Raf and is waiting out the night with his eyes glowing as protective nightlights.Β
(On a tangent--what color are Ratchet's eyes, really?Β After his ill-advised experiments with synthetic energon, they look more green than blue, as if the synthetic stuff permanently stained his optic lenses.Β No one in the show mentions it, though, so maybe I'm just misinterpreting changes in the ambient lighting around Ratchet.)
(On another tangent--it's part of my headcanon that whenever bots are in the field or otherwise without safe, individual quarters, they pick a spot and nap together in a rather disorganized carpet, with doors, wheels, and other body parts sticking up like skyscrapers in some kind of surreal metal city.Β Autobots being the gregarious creatures they are, they thrive on company and contact, and the "puppy pile" makes it easy for two or three sentries to keep an eye on everyone.Β Further--if one bot picks up on a possible threat and starts moving, he'll wake up at least one or two others, and the whole squad will be awake and alert in seconds, which improves their odds of survival on a world like Cybertron.)
The other "screenshot moment" is inside Ratchet's mind.Β Optimus is trying to explore and find what he needs to know without breaking into the locked buildings of Ratchet's psyche, but he hasn't been having much luck.Β He's just picked a side alley and discovered a fluid (blood) trail heading off somewhere.Β He's trying to work out whether what he sees is the manifestation of one of Ratchet's painful memories or a trail he needs to follow to find Ratchet's core self.Β What Optimus doesn't know is that Ratchet's core self is right there, crouched across from him and trying to get through to him.Β Unfortunately, the Autobots aren't too familiar with the psychic patch, and while Optimus can perceive and interact with Ratchet's static memory, he's out of sync with Ratchet's active intelligence.Β For Ratchet, it's like being a ghost or trapped in the Shadow Zone.Β He can see and hear Optimus, but he can't make Optimus see or hear him.Β It's a strange kind of isolation--it's normal for Ratchet to be alone in his own mind, but now that someone else is there he can't make any kind of contact.Β So it's more likely than not that Optimus will follow that trail and find Ratchet's memory of the night when Bumblebee, who was a kid barely out of training at the time, was carried in nearly dead and with vocal unit mangled beyond repair.Β In Ratchet's mind, BB's continuing disability is a constant reminder and reproach.
Optimus will probably also come across some manifestation of Ratchet's regard for and memories of him.Β I'm not sure how that would look as an image, but it's clear from the way those two work together that Ratchet loves Optimus (in the bond of friendship sense) both for himself and for what he stands for as the Prime.Β That could be an interesting moment--I'm sure Optimus could handle it with grace and respect for Ratchet's privacy and dignity, but if the rest of his troops are watching, they might find it extremely awkward or embarrassing to have seen that.Β (At least one or two of them would spend some time wondering what their relationships would look like on the psychic patch monitor.)
Thinking about it just brought up another plot point--how on Earth would the Autobots get a hold of the psychic patch in the first place?Β It's not something one can find parts for in the local hardware store and a DIY manual for online.
I think Prime's compassion has been cited in his official bios as both his strength and his greatest weakness.Β Optimus' people love him and will follow him to every form of hell there is because they know he loves them and will never ask them to risk their lives for anything he wouldn't personally sacrifice himself for.Β That mutual trust and respect gives Prime an advantage over Megatron--Optimus doesn't worry about internal conspiracies and plots against him.Β Instead he can trust his people to guard his back while he faces the external threats head-on.Β However, going back to the very first series of the mid-80s, Prime lost his life (in the 1986 movie that scarred a fair chunk of my generation) because he would not kill one of his own, even to finish Megatron.Β Had he taken the shot instead of saying, "Out of my way, Hot Rod!", he would almost certainly have killed Hot Rod, but he'd also have taken out Megatron.Β Most of Prime's troops, including Hot Rod himself, would probably have agreed that that was an acceptable tradeoff.Β Prime didn't.
Ratchet, for his part, is usually characterized as something of a curmudgeon, but I think at least part of his "ferocious medic" persona is an act.Β It's not just a way to protect his own much-wounded soul, either, though that's definitely part of it.Β Ratchet is almost as old as Optimus, and he knows the workings of the Autobot mind almost as well as he knows the workings of their bodies.Β He knows what the stress of warfare can do, especially over the long haul.Β He's got a wise, compassionate old soul himself, and he uses his position to keep his charges sane as well as physically sound.Β He barks and growls at those who come to him with injuries, and makes it clear that they aren't fit for duty until he says they are--which lets them off the hook psychologically.Β They want to get back to work, of course they do, but the tyrannical doctor will blow his stack and get Optimus to put the offending patient on medical leave until the sun goes nova if the wounded party dares try to go back on duty before he's fully recovered.Β A bot doesn't have to put himself through more pain to prove his loyalty to his buddies.Β He can blame Ratchet for the time it takes him to heal--and Ratchet will keep a bot on the injured list until he's sure that both body and mind are ready to get back to the fight.
Ratchet's also aware of his symbolic role as the medic.Β Off the battlefield, he's a marker of "home" and safety--the doctor is protected so he can work, and by extension, anyone near the doctor is also protected.Β For the uninjured soldier, Ratchet is a confidence booster.Β Defending him is an important but fairly straightforward duty.Β He can't take on Decepticons and save lives at the same time, so he needs someone to guard his back while he works.Β The newest recruit has armor and long-range weapons that a medic just can't carry, and he's been trained to fight while (most) medics have learned only the basics of hand to hand.Β Ratchet and his colleagues need bodyguards, and being needed does a lot for a young, inexperienced mind.Β Of course, we've seen Ratchet carve up Decepticons for spare parts by himself before, but he's careful not to reveal those skills unless he absolutely has to.
Whew--er, yeah.Β I ramble a lot if given even a slight opportunity.

That right there is poetry, my friend. It fits beautifully with Ratchet's personality in the show. Now I'm wishing we got to see him do something like that in the show....;DΒ

Rambling is most of what my mind does, when it's not busy digging up lyrics to songs I haven't heard in years or reading up on whatever semi-random topic has grabbed my attention of late.Β I've got some pretty lengthy rambles scattered around DA--some of them coherent, others not so much.Β I've gotten a lot of good inspiration from the art here, and usually my first impulse is to tell the artist all about the story that his/her art touched off in my head.Β I think some artists get a kick out of it and others think I'm nuts.Β It makes me happy, at least--I know I love it when someone writes a comment on my work.
