In my AU, Ratch has a bit of a different backstory to the original.
For starters, he isn't technically a Cybertronian. Alchemist (He and Macadam are two halves of the same whole) was very paranoid about a threat like Unicron coming back, so he built multiple soldiers that he wanted to be able to fight as good if not better than Alchemist's brethren. He gave each of them special abilities deriving from either one of Solus' creations or a literal piece of a dead Prime - a very nasty one called Stargazer has Liege Maximo's voicebox, for example.
These 'soldiers' were so specifically made that a normal spark wasn't capable of merging with it, so Alchemist started harvesting pieces of whatever remained of his own along with Alpha Trion's and Sentinel's (both of whom were aware of it, though only Alpha was bothered by it). Once the creation was given life, he was routinely "upgrade" it. This process was very violent, for it meant cutting them open and rearranging them while they were still conscious. Alchemist believed that inducing stasis would weaken them and that if they could be tough enough to handle being ripped apart and put back together over and over, then they were what he needed. 95% of them died, and he used their parts in those that survived.
Ratch was one of 'em, though he was Hot Cross back then. He was Alchemist's favourite, because of one quality he couldn't seem to match with the others. Hot Cross was the definition of a robot. Emotionless, obedient, barely even spoke. His 'ability' was strong resistance to heat. Hot Cross would wash in magma, for example. He and his fellows were used in the war against the Quintessons and were like the original Wreckers. Most of the survivors died, and those that survived were all deemed as perfect by Alchemist.
Obviously, Ratch didn't stay in that state. He was sent to kill someone who was a thorn in the council's side, but she was expecting him and he ended up in a vat of acid. Instead of leaving him to die as planned, she saved him. That act of kindness was something he didn't understand at the time, and through a lot of trial and error, she 'fixed' him. He was able to leave that life with a new identity, but it's always bothered him.
One of Alchemist's experiments was a serum that kept his soldiers in a constant state of being the equivalent of a 20-year-old. The Synth-En acted in a similar way with Ratch, and it's how he was able to do all of those moves. You don't just inject yourself with Mt Dew and become a ninja, so it's an explanation for how he was able to do that. It's also why he chose to burn that miner's face. It was what Hot Cross would do to those he was ordered to "warn", and is where his name came from.
Also part of my AU is what he did about what happened to him. In short, he's the one responsible for every Councilman's death - even Alpha Trion's. He technically betrayed the Autobots just so Alpha would get scrapped, and he's proud of it. He has a very deep-rooted hatred for Primes, and never sees Optimus as one. I don't think he's ever called Optimus by Prime or used the full name, adding to it.
Optimus knows most of what's gone one with his old friend (except for Alpha, obviously). Optimus realised the moment that Ratch burned that miner's face that he was acting how he used to be, making him a danger to everyone, including himself. Even though he's an old mech who tries to avoid fighting and hasn't had that serum in a while, he's strong enough to run at Bulkhead and throw him with not too much effort.
He has the perfect makings of being a Decepticon (as many of his fellow 'soldiers' chose to follow Megatron), but instead, he chose to help people/Mecha through medicine. He chose to fight with a Prime, even though he hates them. There's a lot more to it, but that's a summary of why he's my favourite.

My only issue is how small Rafael is when compared to Ratchet. There's definitely a difference in size between them, but not this great.
That aside, awesome picture. Ratchet was my favorite character from the show.

I just started toying around with this image as a plot element, and if I was going to plot a story around it, it would probably involve MECH as the villians.Β Perhaps Ratchet felt like taking a little drive, just to clear his head after a long week or more of putting his trouble-magnet comrades back together.Β Rafael went along for one reason or another.Β Their timing was of course perfectly wrong--MECH was lurking and took the opportunity to cripple and kidnap Ratchet.Β They nabbed Rafael at the same time to use as a hostage to force Ratchet to cooperate.Β This scene could be the aftermath of the capture, the results of MECH's first attempts to interrogate Ratchet (they'd rather beat him up and get him to turn over what he knows voluntarily than risk damaging that information by invading his body and trying to strip it from his processing core and memory), or Rafael desperately trying to save Ratchet's life after the big guy almost killed himself trying to help Raf escape.Β In any case, I can hear Silas telling Rafael, "I'm sure you've already figured this out, but in case it's slipped your mind--you're alive because I can use you to pry open that robot's mouth.Β If it turns out that the only way to get what I want is to take his body apart, you'll be dead weight.Β Literally."
Of course Silas is also planning on taking advantage of any rescue attempts to capture more bots, but he's not about to tell Raf that.
