Description
Warning: HUGE file [DL link below for slow connections]What's "spacing?" Spacing gives you this effect. While it can be useful, generally it is not. Photoshop's default setting for spacing is about 5%.
!!! This tutorial should translate fairly painlessly to any adobe CS edition. As far as technique, this should also work in any advanced program with layers. !!!
---
BRUSH SETSave this to your computer, don't click 'open'
To load brushes: With brush tool active, Right click > Load
At the very bottom of the list you'll see two brushes named 175. I used the first one.
---
I made this assuming you had little to no experience with Photoshop. So don't be insulted that I showed a pic of the move tool lol (sorry if there are spelling errors. Also, sorry for the scatteryness. That's how I organize things)
Should translate to other programs decently well. if something is unclear or hard to see, let me know and I'll clarify in the artist's comments. Noticed people wanted to know how to use textures and how I painted, so...this.
Here's the finished speedpaint & another with the same techniques
&
This was about 2 hours of work. So if you were to keep going
it would need more highlights and such, which you can figure out on your own.
---
Q: Why use RGB and not CMYK if you're going to print?
A: You can use either. I think the reason I do it is because I've had problems in the past moving textures to a project because the Color Modes were different. Or it's just a habit lol
---
Q: "This is similar to the effect "photo filter" - except to use photo filter on an entire picture it needs to be flattened" But photo filter does affect the entire picture if used as an adjustment layer on top of the other layers?
A: Super true, I didn't mention that. I rarely use adjustment layers. Who knows why. Doesn't mean you guys can't, so keep that in mind when you're working! If you don't know how, that's fine, my method above is basically the same.

I have CS5 but I have to say, thank you for this tut. I only use Photoshop for my art and even though my style is Cartoony, it's always helpful to have a tut that's not about SAI.

It's really close to CS5, the only difference is some extra features and the way some things are handled also some tools disappeared ARKJNRJKGN So no problem C: Hope it works for you.

I haven't seen SAI's layout in years, but for blending modes and such I think most programs are fairly universal. You might struggle with finding some of the menus, but the jargon should be similar.

Don't worry about it too much. Some of the best artists are still traditional, so you're not missing out. it's just another medium. If it makes you feel better, CS6 is only $169 for a student version. I think the full price is about $990. Huge discount. You don't give up your copy after you graduate either. You have to have a decently strong computer and grpahics card too though :\ In the end, I feel like it's less expensive than spending money on paint and canvas. Canvas is expensive dude.

Lovely tutorial! This is definitely something that I'm going to reference a bit to improve my own works. I only have one question though; Why use RGB? If you're doing stuff for print, shouldn't you use CMYK?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Shapooda In reply to Dervila [2012-08-08 19:06:50 +0000 UTC]
Technically you can use both, but when you convert to CMYK more often than not it will look exactly the same. So if you wanna paint it in RGB then switch, it should look the same C: ~I only use RGB because I think I've had trouble in the past dragging textures onto it because the color modes have been different. Or it's just habit XD
~And thanks C: I hope it helps (Gonna reference your question and my answer in mah comments)

Thank you for the tutorial!!
(It's different from most of the speedpaint tutorials I see, since most of them are usually background speedpaints)

Shapooda In reply to mesval [2012-08-08 17:28:56 +0000 UTC]
Yup, It's rare that you see a speedpaint when it's not of a background, and backgrounds are just characters but they take longer and usually have straight lines lol

Shapooda In reply to Jermmgirl [2012-08-08 17:33:10 +0000 UTC]
I've screwed around with them just enough that I have a decent handle on them. If you really wanna shake things up, then eyedropper tool some colors WITH the overlay layers ON. It tinkers with your color and gives you a different shade than you thought you had. It makes painting really interesting C:
