Yeah...I went kinda crazy with the texturing.
Oh well...what can I say...

Wow, this one is pretty cool. The wood-like textures make it look like distorted ceiling fans. I like the variety of colors, too.

Ha ha...distorted ceiling fans...you know...I actually thought of that when I was doing this. For real...
Thanks for the nice comments.

I think its got a great stained-glass feel to it
I also like the subtle 3-D layering throughout
Very nice

Holy crap, Gary! This is too cool for words! I love the effect you've created here. You happen to know of a tut for the interated coloring? I haven't played with it much...

Actually I do:
Iterated Coloring by Toby Marshall
I actually found this tut after I had figured out how to do this type of coloring. I had seen and been totally blown away by the work of Dan Kuzmenka . The coloring and texturing that he does is out of this world.
So...I did a param search at the UF mailing list database for Mark Townsends work. You won't find many tricks in UF that Mark hasn't already done, so I thought he would have some pieces using this technique. Sure enough...
So I studied what he was doing, and basically it involved taking using a OCA that allowed different coloring modes...DoodadII is one example. If you look at the Doodads II params, you'll see the Coloring Mode param (the sixth one down).
There are several ways to work with this...The basic idea is to use a base layer for shape, then duplicate that layer, change the coloring mode to iteration, and set the iterated layer's merge mode to Color (or Overlay). Change the gradient and as you rotate the gradient you'll see how the iterated coloring layer effects the coloring of the fractal.
Ok..so what I did was take it a step farther. I realised that if you use a black and white gradient with the black being very thin and sharp, then as you rotate the gradient, different parts of the iterated coloring layer become visible, while others are hidden. Use these as masks, and you can place different textures on different parts of the fractal. Cool, no?
I should probably write a tut on this....

Well I'll be darned...That is so easy. Cool is an understatement! Evidently, I need to do more reading about MT's little tricks. I've seen it done several times, but never could figure it out. Thanks TONS for hooking me up with the info. You really should do a tut on this, it would help alot of others out. Do you have a link to the database you could toss over?
Thanks again, Gary!!!

Thanks.
I used several iterated coloring layers with transforms as texture masks. Hard to see in the thumb, but I used nine different textures throughout the fractal.
The beauty of using iterated coloring is that you can use a thin black and white gradient, and as you rotate it, different parts of the fractal will suddenly pop into view. You can then use these layers as masks to apply different textures to different parts of the fractal. Funky, no?
And right about now you're thinking, "This is waaaay more than I was born to know"....lol!

Far from being something I didn't want to know. typed out and saved your comment! Any hints I get from folks here are much appreciated. If I use this idea...format...style (?) I will try to remember to credit you. I really have to figure out masks. I have missed a very basic piece of knowledge somewhere along the line, so when I try to use them I get fouled up. Have read the tutorial in UF and read another one here...but I STILL can't seem to get the hang of them.

Once you understand how masks work, they are really very simple to do.
I finally grasped, really grasped masking by going through Rick Spik's tut. One of the main things that he points out, and it is true, is that the key point to masking is learning how to control the leading edge of a gradient.
Here is his tut:
Rykk's Masking Tutorial
Now, if you're like me, I hate doing tuts. BUT! To really improve with UF, you pretty much have to. Here's how I do tuts now...first, I go through a tut line by line...not just reading it, but actually doing the tut as I go. If the tut has images as an example, I try to make sure my images look like (or close) to the tut images. If I mess up somewhere, I go back and do it again, paying closer attention.
Once I get through the tut, I go back and do it again, because the second time the concepts in the tut will make more sense. The second time through, I do it line by line again.
At this point, the tut should be making sense to me. So I go through it again, this time playing with the different settings and ideas prsented in the tut just to see how certain things effect other things.
Now, I start trying the ideas of the tut with my own images. Putting the ideas into actual work really helps cement the knowledge gained.
With Rykk's tut, it took me about 4 times to get completely through it. Then the second time completely through it really made sense. I can honestly say that this tut really helped me totally grasp the idea of masking.
This help?

Thanks for the link. I've downloaded it and will see what I can learn. Yup! Dinna like tuts either, but they are a necessary evil! IF this gets through my thick skull, I'll be using it soon. My goal right now is getting depth to Apo imports using UF shapes like Rykk does. Didn't know he had a tutorial, was so mind blown by his gallery didn't even look for tuts! Silly me!

Had no trouble getting the masks and textures but you should have seen the fractal forms it gave me. No lovely round balls, or "commas". Ii can't even describe the shapes. Even the so called background had a big black hole in the middle of it. Error messages up the ying yang when I tried loading doodads. When I hit F7 things changed colors, I wound up "clearing" my desk. Poor kitty, it's a good thing she understands swearing! She got out of the way just in time!

I would say just back up and try it again...take your time and follow the tut exactly as written (not that you didn't, but sometimes I think I am doing a tut wrong and then I realise that I miss a line in the tut that makes all the diff).
About the error messages...updated your formulas lately?

ArtistInWaiting In reply to sharkrey [2005-09-19 02:10:50 +0000 UTC]
Actually I think I followed the tut pretty well, there my be some interpretation problems but I'm getting the jist of what he is saying. And since the reason I'm doing it is because I want to learn how to use masks and textures, I think I'm getting a lot out of it. My problems are starting with the background layer and getting worse from there of course. I did the tut 3 times and it got farther away from the original each time. And there are little things he doesn't tell you, like formula iterations are set at 30 and bailout is 44 which he doesn't mention in the tut. He only knows what else he left out.
The error messages were that various lines in the formula weren't loading properly. I think it might have something to do with the version I'm using. I have 3.4 and 4, they both handle things differently. Also I've never used "switch" before and that may be causing problems. Don't really know how to handle it.

Ok...tell you what...give me about two days to work something up, then I'll send you a note with an idea on how we can settle this masking issue.

Thanks Sharkrey. Believe it or not I used masking in "Cut Stones". It was a reverse mask too, because I wanted in only in the gray part surrounding the clear part of the "Agate". No room for a "leading edge" as the area was so small.
