As designed the Gearing class destroyer was built as a cheaper supplement to the modernized Essex II Block II refit or Boxer Class as they were called in service. The Gearing was designed to replace the standard Essex II and older, unrefitted Lola III Class Destroyers thanks to its increased speed which let it keep pace with the Lola's and other faster elements in the fleet when they were introduced in 2760.

Like the Lola III the Gearing lacked a DropShip collar but had double the fighter complement of the older ships, capable of carrying 12 fighters and 4 Small Craft.Of those built, 5 would survive until Operation KLONDIKE but of those, only the Iron Eagle is active.
