The Kirishima class was the Draconis Combine's first cruiser scale vessel constructed since the fall of the Star League centuries before. Better protected, faster and more heavily armed than the SLDF era vessels in use by the Clans the Kirishima represents a potent space borne threat. Her high speed allows her to act as a raiding vessel whilst also having firepower and protection to engage the Clan's Black Lion class of battlecruiser and completely outclasses the common Sovetski Soyuz class in Clan service.

Unfortunately this performance came at a horrifically short range. With only 12,000 tons of cargo onboard the Kirishima can barely support herself as well as her three dropships and dozen fighters. And due to them being so expensive to produce the Combine's Admiralty was loathed to risk the highly valuable vessels and the Kirishima class actually saw little action, limited by their high cost and woefully short range. But when they did see action they performed well.

The original Art for the Kirishima made these vessels look squat and apparently had no engines or thrusters which would account for their blistering speed (maximum of 4g thrust) so I asked Plog if he could keep it the same, but do more, to both enlarge and refine the look. And by jove did he succeed!
