Description Self explanatory. This method can be used for everything from digi-grade, planti-grade, full suits, quad suits, satyrs, and more. There are MANY ways to make a fursuit, this is just how I do it.

Part two: Patterning and cutting out the fur. I don't know if I will be showing sewing as there are many methods to that as well and my current sewing machine is not exactly a prime example of a good suit sewing machine.

I know this post is really really old but I have a question and I think this is a good place to ask it! I'm currently wring on a body suit and I'm wondering if it's okay/good to blur digitigrade padding directly to the suit to keep it in? Or should I do something else?

Sharpe19 In reply to IamWarriorChristain [2015-05-07 12:15:24 +0000 UTC]

You can attach the padding directly to the body I normally make it removable for easier washing.

How do you make it removable? If it's not a trade secret >w<

Number of ways you can do it. Pockets, pillows, pouches...

Okay, Thank you! I really didn't want to glue the foam to the fabric because I have a tendency to recycle costumes a lot >.< Thanks for your time!Β

Now that I'm calm and can think straight, what is the purpose of the plastic wrap?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to Redd-wulf [2013-01-08 12:39:04 +0000 UTC]

You cannot pattern straight onto the duct tape as it will stick. I use this same method when making my own dtd. Saves clothing and prevents me from standing in a room in only my skivies once the tape and clothing is cut off.

Keeping the patterning tape from sticking is one thing it does, strengthening the pattern and making it easier to work with is another. You don't have to use plastic wrap, but news paper, garbage bags, etc. can also be used. Just some layer in between the tape and dtd.

If you've hit any 'furring' streams chances are that I did make some. Don't worry I'm not out of streams. I've got a few felines to make here in the upcoming weeks.

um, I know nothing about suitmaking.

First, what's a dtd?
Second, how do you make one?
A tutorial for that would be most helpful! Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to wordweaver1001 [2013-01-08 12:43:38 +0000 UTC]

1. A dtd, or duct tape dummy, is a personalized dress makers dummy created using duct tape wrapped around a wearer (usually yourself) so it is, in itself, a duct tape copy of you.

2. Here's a couple tutorials on how to make one:

Something I do differently rather than use my own clothing as the base (or painters overalls as you will see in one) is I will do something identical to the tutorial I have posted. I will wear standard regular clothing, wrap myself in plastic wrap, then tape. When it comes to cutting it off, I only cut the tape and plastic wrap, saving me a set of clothes and keeping myself from standing in a room in nothing but my skivvies.

This is great, thank you! Though what do you use for padding?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RainbowDashyMD In reply to TheRadishMeister [2013-01-13 10:00:53 +0000 UTC]

Most fursuit makers (meaning I've never seen anyone who hasn't) use foam you can get from any craft store really. But not the hard stuff. Make sure the foam is malleable/bendable/soft/squishy or what have you :3 Same stuff you would use for a foam based head :3 Hope I helped

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheRadishMeister In reply to RainbowDashyMD [2013-01-16 00:01:54 +0000 UTC]

but doesn't it tear if you put it over a joint eg your knee, like in this picture? No one seems willing to clarify it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RainbowDashyMD In reply to TheRadishMeister [2013-01-16 05:36:56 +0000 UTC]

It shouldn't tear and the foam should be perfectly capable of handling any movement you throw at it BUT if you are really that worried about tearing some people create pockets, like the ones in your pants just a lot bigger, where they want the digitigrade look then stuff the pocket with stuffing. I've never heard anyone say anything about the padding tearing though and even if it somehow does tear it's super easy to replace :3

Though many suiters/makers create those types of pockets even when using foam. Because it holds the foam in the correct place while siuting and saves you the trouble of having to move the padding back into place if it moves.
