Description I thought since I had 2 furheads going on at once, why not do a tutorial? Those out there who helped me get started, I thank you very much!^^ To those who this helps, lemmy know how it turns out and tell me what you think or alert me of mistakes/something I may be missing/ or questions not answered by these.

Part 2 will be up... possibly as early as tomorrow. But not likely, knowing my life.

P.S... This is going to be my newest head, Katsu the Red-tailed Hawk. He'll most likely only be a head but I'd like to do a full suit of him. Katsu will cover the "cartoon/anime" part of this tutorial.

*** I will be selling this guy when I'm done! He'll most likely be around $350-$400, all depending on the detail I put into 'im. That and the fact that he'll have a moving jaw. If you're interested, note me.***

How many inches thick is the foam you used to cut the beak?

Oh gosh, specifics I have no idea. I'd guess 3-4 inches.

Question - any recommendations on how to get a block of foam like that? Like salvage it from furniture or buy it new or what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to RebelMyth [2015-06-10 15:27:12 +0000 UTC]

You can purchase foam from craft stores either in the thickness shown or layer up thinner pieces.

Looks awesome so far! (I know this is old, but I wanted to ask something.. xD) Is the beak one piece of thick foam? :0 Or did you use multiple pieces of foam?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to Shiinrai [2014-06-29 20:04:26 +0000 UTC]

For this one it was all one piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiinrai In reply to Sharpe19 [2014-06-29 20:18:23 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thanks!
Would you recommend using one piece for canine bases too?

Sharpe19 In reply to Shiinrai [2014-06-29 21:04:51 +0000 UTC]

It's easier now adays to build up with several layers. Means you save foam if you use templates.

Ohh I see.
Do you know any good templates I could possibly use? :0
This is gonna be my first time, and Im so scared Im going to screw everything up

What size thickness of foam did you use? I'm working on an avian head with a rather large beak and I've bene trying to make it out of "foamies" but it jsut dosn't seem to be working. Foamies do work great for smaller beaks though, like Pigeons!

What type of foam do you recommend for a beginner?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to Bueshang [2010-08-25 01:51:50 +0000 UTC]

Upholstery foam. thickness? Um. Haha, I actually use thick pieces (8 inch about)for the muzzle and about 1/2 thickness for the face along with some thin 1/8 inch sheets to smooth things out. But thickness may vary from furrier to furrier.

So I've seen a few photos of fursuit heads while still in the works, and seen a lot of people
saying they use upholstery foam. So I was wondering, would that be the best thing to use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to ArizonaJackal [2010-07-07 23:30:34 +0000 UTC]

I've always favored the balaclava method with upholstery foam just because it;s lightweight, very breatheable, very sensitive if done right, and nearly indestructible, un I like mesh heads which tend to break after a while.

Resin is another that I really favor, but that method is expensive and very time consuming. If you are just starting off, I would highly recommend upholstery foam. It's very forgiving. Even though I use resin, I still will keep up on my foam because I like it so much.^^

Hope this helps!

ArizonaJackal In reply to Sharpe19 [2010-07-09 03:10:17 +0000 UTC]

So I suppose upholstery foam is my best bet? It sounds like a really good
material; and from what someone else said, it isn't too incredibly expensive
either, depending on the amount one would buy.

Thank you :3 I just thought it would be a good idea for me to see the benefits
of foam compared to other materials, since I was thinking of trying this out.
Thanks =]

It's cheaper to get upholstery foam by the pound (chunks) if you can find it.

If you have any questions, I'm happy to help.^^

Upholstery foam

Boompoet In reply to Sharpe19 [2010-08-15 05:01:28 +0000 UTC]

Is that high density or low density? What thinckness do you prefer? Do you use a spray adhesive?

Sorry for all the question, I'm trying out a head on my own and it seems like it's going be a lot of work especially since I've never done any kind of soft sculpture before.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to Boompoet [2010-08-15 17:54:15 +0000 UTC]

um, it's medium density. I hate low because it tears too easily. Thickness? Haha, I use chunks that are a good 6 inches thick. As for adhesive, I use low temp hot glue. High temp you'll melt the foam and burn your fingers.

THanks fo the help. I'll post a picture if the big lump of foam I have riht now turns ino anything.

Awesome Sharpe! Can't wait to see him done!
OWCH! Watch those blades! We use those for 'cutting' (castrating/desexing) calves and i know, they're VERY sharp! *looks at long scar along finger and remembers when my brother severed his tendon... oh the blood... so... much... blood* Be careful! Do u have a scouple handle?

Looks awesome! Great job!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to SpiritOfTheWild [2009-02-14 15:27:55 +0000 UTC]

Nope, no handle. I've found it a little more accurate to go without...that and I can't find one.

I'm very grateful the ones I work with are sterile. I've lost count on how many times I've nicked myself and had to superglue myself back together. It's mostly my needle I have to worry about. It's one of those Diamond head cutting leather needles. It has a round shaft but the tip is triangle shaped with each edge really sharp. Wonderful little thing till you stick yourself...

AS for wanting to see it done, I do too. I'm planning on selling 'im when I get done. I don't want to use fur like everyone else this time. I wanna use feathers. I mean c'mon... he's a bird isn't he? Birds don't have fur. (Unless they're a gryphon... then they can get away with it. ^^)

wow... feahers... that's gunna be... complex...? I don't really have any idea how you'd do that... good luck with it...

Yah, we use the steile ones as well, but after cutting the balls of abotu 30 calves (we usually change blades after that)it's not all that sterile, but still sharp.

Eek... your needle sounds sharp! i just use normal needles... barly sharp enough to draw blood.

I'm sorry. I was always the one holding him down while the vet did the cuttin'.That was till we got to a horse that was a little big for me so he sat on him while I followed the instructions. Twas an interesting experience. ;¬_¬

Oh! Gotchya! lmao. I hate 'dropping' animals! It's so dangerous! We use a crush (do u know what that is? a big metal thing that holds them still) but we used to drop, and man youd end up so bruised! lol...

Sharpe19 In reply to SpiritOfTheWild [2009-02-17 23:51:00 +0000 UTC]

With the bulls, we just run them into the chute and cut 'em. With the horses, we give them nice drugs and just let them tip over themselves. (we may have to give a helping hand with a rope every now and then, but nothing extreme)

We had a young mule come in one time. We had to double dose the bugger before we could get anywhere near is hind quarters. Darn thing still cracked one of my ribs.

In the end he was nutless and wolf-toothless.
