Description Just more to the tutorial. I've covered the head that will be furred/feathered with duct tape. Once that is completed, mark on the tape what part of the head (example: right brow, left cheek, lower left jaw, muzzle, etc.) and the direction you want the fur going.

*What you are doing is you're making a pattern for your fur.*

In part 5, I'll show you what to do with the tape. But first, I've gotta get feathers so I'm a little unsure how lone that'll take. When in comes to inserting the realistic eyes, attaching fur/horns/teeth/etc. I'll show you with another head since Katsu obviously is a bird and doesn't have any of these features( unless there's someone out there who's interested in purchasing him once done and would like certain feature added.)

*** I will be selling Katsu when he is finished! If there's anyone who'd like to claim him now, let me know. If you'd like him to have a certain color of feathers, I'll go and get white feathers and airbrush them. If you'd like some added feature, let me know now before part 5!***

That's fine I was thinking of commissioning Phoenixwolfsuits if you didn't have the head 'cause now I'm just too busy to make a fursuit head myself

I realize you did not post this finished guy, but wanted to ask you a question as this is the only bird tutorial I have found and wanted to ask what you may use for fabric for the beak. I have my mask all carved out and have no idea how to make the beak work. I purchased some spandex like material but it doesn't work well with the rough cuts and edges that come from carving foam. All your masks and work are awesome and any hlp would be greatly appreciated! Keep up the good work though and look forward to your future projects.

This head was never finished actually :/ I've heard people using an interfacing on a layer or two of spandex or others using Vinyl or fleece!

JayRobArt In reply to Sharpe19 [2015-04-19 01:15:58 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! those are great ideas, I definitely will try the interfacing here as I already have the spandex material. I can totally relate on the difficulty of feathers though as I had that problem myself but found a fabric that looks very much like small feathers and should work, but cover the whole head in feathers boggles my mind. I am sure if you got this guy done though he would look awesome as he already does without any feathers.

Omg I have a huge problem not sure how to do this..
So I want to make a bird character, but not sure how to start the beak. Should I put my pattern on the flat side and cut out like you did? But then I worry it'll be too thin and the beak will look really skinny from the front! I have some green two inch foam.. What do you think I should do?

-Hope that made any sense-

Sharpe19 In reply to AlphaRabbit [2013-01-19 18:16:34 +0000 UTC]

Then take your foam and glue two pieces together so you have now a 4 inch thick piece. Proceed to pattern and carve!

Wow, this is very impressive. O:
I'm very (brand) new to suiting, I haven't even made my first yet ;__; -fail- I've been contemplating on trying to make one for many, many months now, and I've finally decided to go for it, haha XD
Well, in my research, I came across your dA page. So yeah, uh.... I've been looking around your gallery and just... wow o____o You're extremely talented at this, lol, your work is incredible!

Well, I was just wondering (this is kind of a stupid question... very much so. σ__σ ), when placing the duct tape onto the foam... it doesn't stick to the point where it would damage it? D8 How does that work? lawls
Obviously not, I guess, considering this is how I've seen it done, but... yeah... I don't even know if what I said made much sense ;____;

I apologize, you might be seeing more lame questions from me in the not too far future.... o3o

If the foam is really cheap stuff, the tape will stick. But the tape usually peels right off, no trouble. It may snag on some here and there, but nothing terrible.

Thank you.^^ I've only been doing this for about 3 years now so just goes to show what happens when yer really bored. XD I'm always willing to help, just ask away and I will try to answer the best I can.

Thanks a ton for clearing that up, LOL

Oh,wow, that's amazing 8D Only three years and you're already this good... ;3
Aww, thank you so much~ I'll be sure to ask if I need any help once I start building. You've been such a huge help already; thank you!

Thank you so much! ^^
I haven't. I'm wondering if I ever will... I'm thinking on just selling him as is and letting the new owner put the feathers/fur/etc. on him. The jaw movement is amazing and he's so light weight. I just have no use for him, even if I ever did finish him.

darkoctober [2009-02-21 03:29:31 +0000 UTC]

just out of curiosity, how much would he cost?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to darkoctober [2009-02-21 05:34:15 +0000 UTC]

Most likely $250-300. Everything is hand crafted from the beak to the eyes. Not to mention his beak moves. If you were to purchase him, are there any particular colors/markings/etc.?

darkoctober In reply to Sharpe19 [2009-02-21 05:42:33 +0000 UTC]

that's for the head alone right?
i'm seriously considering it but can i ask if you'd take a commission? i'm really picky about fursuits which is why i don't have one, and i really like yours. I would just need the head, hands, and tail, so how much would that cost. i'm not 100% sure if i'm going to get a suit yet but like i said i'm seriously considering it and i really like your work.

Are you talking about the hawk or another species? That's for the head done, yes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

darkoctober In reply to Sharpe19 [2009-02-21 06:50:54 +0000 UTC]

i was talking about another species, sorry that i wasn't clear

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to darkoctober [2009-02-23 01:17:17 +0000 UTC]

Let's see...
For a mask without a moving jaw (Such as Nana) the price would be about $200, adding $15 for every extra(realistic eyes, eyes that follow, piercings, markings, custom tattoos, etc.)

For a head with a moving jaw, the price starts at $250 and adds $20 for extra add-ons(custom teeth such as enlarged canines, custom tongue, etc.)

Paws and tails aren't difficult. Paws would start at $25-30 with a $5 charge for custom claws, etc. And tails are $10 with a $5 charge for custom markings, jewelry (tail ring or some random item).

Frankly, I'm one of the cheaper furriers out there today. Many people will charge $500-600 for a simple head and paws/ tails usually range about in the $20's-50's.

Other species that I can do right now are canines, felines, avians, and dragons. If you'd like a different species, I an very flexible in my work and can very easily make a panda, raccoon, or some other animal out there.

This is coming along beautifully Sharp. The beak shape is absolutely perfect, and very well proportioned with the head.

Sharpe19 In reply to BlueWolfCheetah [2009-02-19 04:57:06 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thank you! I know at the very point at the top of the beak where the beak meets the brow is a little short, but I did that on purpose. This way I can add the extra "skin" surrounding the nares.

Got any good ideas on what to cover the beak with?

BlueWolfCheetah In reply to Sharpe19 [2009-02-19 13:45:12 +0000 UTC]

No prob.

My recomendation? Fleece.

Sharpe19 In reply to BlueWolfCheetah [2009-02-20 04:56:45 +0000 UTC]

Fleece? Hmmm. That's not a bad idea.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueWolfCheetah In reply to Sharpe19 [2009-02-20 05:02:07 +0000 UTC]

Fleece can give you a nice smooth surface. If you're going for hard and shiny, I recomend paper mache, or even fiber glass if you want to get technical/advanced

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sharpe19 In reply to BlueWolfCheetah [2009-02-20 05:17:02 +0000 UTC]

I haven't got a clue where to get any fiber glass. Insulation fiber glass yes, anything else, um...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueWolfCheetah In reply to Sharpe19 [2009-02-20 05:23:47 +0000 UTC]

I don't know where to get it either, I've no experiance with fiber glass. If it were me, I'd stick with fleece as it's easy to find and use.
