Description Easy Vector Line Width/Weight for Paint Tool Sai
Share on tumblr: [link] (:

So a day or two ago I uploaded a tutorial on how to do line widths easily in illustrator, a few deviants commented on the fact that you could do it on paint tool sai as well! I did not know this, and there wasn't a tutorial about it on deviantart already so I thought i'd just put one together for easy reference.

It is a bit more limited than illustrator but I mean that's to be expected as one is $60 and one is.. $600+ LOL~

If you have any additional tips to add to the comments please say so, i tried to find a way to "move" the width or to make width "points" that were not attached to the actual line's shape points but i couldn't, i don't think you can

Wish there was a tool to change the whole line instead of a certain point..I am new on SAI2 and another issue is that if you use the pen tool to get into a certain curved shape it just won't go further than an specific limit, then curving the next shape makes it a bit weird..

Thanks for the tutorial X3

are this vectors like this in photo shop or adobe illustatrator ? the quality of the drawing wan't get bad when rezising the pictre ?

Shattered-Earth In reply to your-highness-pixel [2015-10-19 02:14:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what the first question is. The second yes, vector art does not lose quality when resized so long as they are saved as a vector file.Β

When using the bend curve, I cant bend the lines that are divided ? How can i connect these lines ? Example of what i mean > Β fav.me/d9ahzv5 Β As you can see from that image, one corner of the star is sharp. I could not bend that line because the two points would not connect thus the curve bending would not apply there ?Β

I'm actually not sure you can close a shape in sai to be honest, which is what you're trying to do here i think. Usually i would use Illustrator for such an application.

Β Okay thanks. That might be something I write to the creator of SAI about, asking if he can fix that.Β

Hey there, i've downloaded Sai a while ago, but i cant get my brushes right so my art... is not quite there (on paper is nowadays better)
But lately i've seen someone on youtube use a good pair of brushes... which are the same as yours.
How can i get them? do i have to download them or such?

Shattered-Earth In reply to ScoutsCas [2015-08-16 04:04:41 +0000 UTC]

I guess i'm a bit confused because this tutorial doesn't cover brushes? If you could explain your problem a little more maybe I could help.

Well, it's not really about the tutorial, but it happened that i just noticed it.
I have like a million different kind of brushes, but i cant find the ones you are using anywhere... just as the vector (of this tutorial)
And now i really wonder how i can create/get them? Could you maybe perhaps help me?

If you follow the tutorial step by step you should create a vector layer on the first step which lets you use the vector tools.

Oh damn, i'm such an idiot... i had to create a new kind of layer... which i haven't ever made yet.
My life is now perfect thanks to your tutorial <3
Thank you ^^

is there a way to make all selected vector lines the same width? i'm wanting to start from scratch on adding certain thinner and thicker points but i want a consistency in the line width or thickness all around.

Shattered-Earth In reply to PooPooBoo [2015-01-05 06:56:25 +0000 UTC]

I opened up sai to test, and i think there is a way. I don't have time to take screen caps but lemme try to type it out and see if it helps.

Open your file and make sure you're on the vector layer

In the tool panel select "edit"

Select the button for the first option "select/deselect"

Now click the upper left corner of your picture and drag to the lower right, this should select all the lines and vector points on your image.

[optional if your base weights are different]
Which everything highlighted, click the "weight" tool. The selected colors will go away but don't worry it should still be selected.
Pick a base weight for all the lines, and click on any of the lines, all the lines should instantly change to match this base.Β
[end optional section]

Now, click the "pressure" tool, then click on any of the points, and drag it all the way right as you can and everything should be maximum 200%

LET GO of the mouse

Then click on a point again and Β drag again back to 100%, everything should shrink back to 100%

Go back to "edit" tool and right click on your image to deselect all the points/lines.

Start to rework again!

I hope that helps, let me know if it doesn't work!
