Description I think this tutorial is a bit confusing, if you had advice for how to make it better or easier to understand please comment D:

Point Perspective
First of all: This is not a walk through for how to construct point perspective drawings.

Second: If you have not, please read the guide I made before this one for beginners:

Third: There are a million how to guides for point perspective, here are some you should look at after this tutorial:

BASIC: [link] (please remember not to over rely on connecting lines, remember to observe around you!)
BASIC-INTERMEDIATE: [link]
ADVANCED:[link]

----------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure how well received this tut will be, it's vastly more complicated than my other tutorials and as such my point doesn't seem to be very crystallized. What I wanted to get across was that vanishing points are vital to understanding perspective, but they are also not the be-all end all to a successful perspective drawing.

The best way to learn is always observe to reinforce the laws and learn when you need more. Parallel lines never cross prematurely nor do they avoid each other. But the entire world isn't made of 1 2 or even 2 point perspectives. If you can't observe the world correctly i don't know if the guides will help I guess.

I didn't want to split it into 3 tutorials cause i think that's a gimmicky way to get more views LOL, but now it's too dense T_T

So...basically everything has a vanishing point, but it's not necessarily the same vanishing point...right?

This is really good, although I should probably read the basic-basic one first before I try any perspective stuff XD

Lulie In reply to Duckface90 [2011-11-02 11:25:05 +0000 UTC]

The idea is that often stuff has multiple vanishing points, depending on the angle you're looking at the object and how big/close it is.

So, if you wanted a building that got smaller at both sides and as it goes up towards the sky, you'd need 3 vanishing points. If, however, you wanted to include a large box floating in the air next to the building that's tilted a completely different direction, you might have to use different vanishing points.

The 'advanced' tutorial linked to in the Artist's Comments explains this really well (scroll down to "Objects with unique vanishing points").

I highly recommend going through all three tutorials linked and trying it out yourself. :3 It looks complicated, but it's just based on a few simple mechanical rules that you can learn quickly.

When objects have volume that goes backwards into space it gets smaller, and if you were to extend it indefinitely eventually it will disappear, you just have to cut it off at the right length haha

Duckface90 In reply to Shattered-Earth [2011-11-02 12:31:11 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I see XD

For a moment, when I read "backwards into space" I though you actually meant space (as in outer space) lol.

You know there's outer space...does that mean there's an inner space too?

great tutorial! i like how you pointed out some non-obvious yet really important points, like how basic perspective is an approximation to reality, and how the horizon represents the eye-level

Thanks! I wasn't sure how to do this one because there are so many point perspective tutorials out there already, what could i bring to the table.. a different way to approaching them i guess XD

Haha, that would be a bit too think i think. Reminds me of a spooky story of a paper-thin woman that hides between the refrigerator and the wall.

AzureInfinity In reply to ??? [2011-11-01 01:21:59 +0000 UTC]

Niice! It's clear. I think. I mean, I already know the theory of perspective, so I do know this stuff (even though I ignore it OTL). I'm not sure I'm the best critiquer of this tutorial XD

Though you do make it so you don't get bored, you gotta love that!

It is pretty toned down in comparison to others X3 But it made me laugh (in a good way) when I read it X3
