Well, the IMPOSSIBLE ASTRONAUT was dedicated to Lis Sladen. I don't think there's any reason to kill off Sarah Jane the character (and the last episode seems to imply the production team felt the same way). She's just off having adventures and the Doctor's stopped checking in on her (like so many other companions). Or if he is, they're just moments we don't see on TV anymore.

The end of THIS story is actually gonna address all of the above issues in a way, but I can't say any more without getting spoilery.

they might declare sarah jane smith dead in about a few years, i mean they said brigadier died in The Wedding of River Song. I'm aware of the dedication in The Impossible Astronaut. I mean, actor who played Liz Shaw died, hasnt been mentioned. I mean, Sarah Jane (in Death of the Doctor) mentioned various companions, and if you read the ebook, she mentions more companions like Grace Holloway, Peri, and Melanie. Very surprised at Grace's mention, cause I thought cause of the downfall of the movie (which I actually liked the movie), didnt think Grace would ever be heard from again.

I think they have about as much need to declare Sarah Jane dead as Barbara, Ben, and Harry. As far as we know, they're all still alive somewhere and doing fine (and in fact, the ep ya mentioned implied as much). Sarah's only slightly different in that she's recently been a part of the show. But so were the the Nobles and the Jones family, and we're not likely to see them again. It's okay to give characters a happy ending and write them out without kllling them.

If they really need to address where she is b/c of some necessary plot point (doubtful), they can always say she's off on a "mission" somewhere. Just killing her off arbitrarily would be a disservice to the character. It's a kinder tribute to let her live on.

Harry is more confirmed to be passed on than alive. She refers to all the others in the present tense, but Harry is in the past tense.

A line cut from "The Wedding of Sarah-Jane Smith" but left in in the novelisation, has Sarah-Jane, the night before the wedding looking up at the stars and talking to the absent Harry about her finally getting married.

I read the line w/ Harry in the past tense as very carefully calculated. He's the only person who she personally knows in that long list, so it isn't that odd to refer to him in the past tense vs. the others. If I was talking about an old friend I hadn't seen since high school, I'd probably say "I really liked that guy" instead of "I really like that guy". Can we read it as he's dead? Absolutely. But they left it ambiguous for the same reason.

The Sarah Jane audios from Big Finish were also very vague about it, but when you really look at it hard, they don't really make sense unless you interpret it as Harry's alive somewhere, but not in Sarah Jane's life as much as she wished.

Didn't know about that bit in the SJA novellization (that's too obscure even for me), but that's certainly a stronger indication than anything else. That's pretty edgy for "canon" though (imagine if we counted "Doctor Who in an Exciting Adventure with The Daleks"!). So Paul's verdict: it's still up in the air.

Maybe you can answer this for me- I've heard the novellization of "Wedding" has a little more about the Brigadier- what's the story on that? Also have ya read Gary Russell's "Beautiful Chaos" by any chance? I gather it gave us some more info on the cliffhanger ending of the BF Sarah Jane audios, and I'm curious to know what tht was...

Alas, I don't know about a Brigadier mention in "The Wedding..." novelisation, as I don't own a copy, I just read about Harry getting a posthumous mention in it.

IMHO if she's said that "Oh, Harry is a lovely fellow", or something like that, then it would be a stronger hint that he's alive. But "And there was Harry. Oh, I loved Harry. He was a doctor, he did such good work with vaccines. He saved thousands of lives." is just... TOO much past tense.

But hey, you want Dr H Sullivan RN to still be out there, I'm not going to be the one to stop you!

Y'know, I had to check the TARDIS index file, b/c I knew there was a book that had Harry living on past 2009. Guess which one it was...

"Damaged Goods" by (drum roll) Rusell T'Davies, which mentions Harry as being alive in 2015.

So THAT'S simplified things. Maybe Harry just fell through a crack in time briefly and was returned when the Elventh Doctor rebooted the Universe. They've used that to explain other RTD plot holes, after all.

Well funny enough... I think ya just did! You've swayed me with your argument. But the thing is- HARRY'S ON THE NEXT PAGE- which was in the middle of being colored and lettered. He actually had a decent part to play in the story, and now I'm considering rewriting it and asking Shawn to redraw what's already been done.

So there- you re-killed Harry Sullivan. Hang your head in shame.

well they might kill her off, in like - 10 years from now maybe? when sarah jane would be likely be retired by then. Too bad we never got to see the brigadiers funeral - cause it stated somewhere that EVERY doctor was there. Maybe their waiting for the last doctor - who knows the how many will be there cause it will likely be more than 13. if its 506 like the doctor said in sja (cause i assume that was a joke in the script) then its going to be one MASSIVE funeral

PaulHanley In reply to KyleWhisper4 [2012-09-08 00:41:57 +0000 UTC]

But killing her off in ten years would be even more arbitrary and odd. It'd be as weird as having a scene where Eleven, Amy, and Rory stop in the middle of an ep to go to the funeral of Ben Jackson. It'd be a pretty stupid move, for a variety of reasons.

On the Brig's funeral- much is made of that by some fans, but keep in mind the actual story was in a Christmas book of short stories by Big Finish. It's not exactly hardcore canon material. It was a nice thought though. A scene I considered briefly for FADE AWAY (the Brigadier comic I did with Shawn) was to have the First Doctor and an unspecified future Doctor (probably well past the 13th) talking. At the end she (yes, you read that pronoun right) takes the First Doctor in to "meet" the Brigadier for the first time. At the end I decided not to though, b/c it seemed too morbid since it was also a memorial to Nick Courtney himself. And to be honest, I've never liked the idea of the First Doctor knowing him past those fleeting glimpses in "The Three Doctors" and "The Five Doctors". It put too much "destiny" into the whole relationship, which is very fanwanky, I think. We never know when we're meeting our very best friends for the first time- it's always something that happens by accident (like bumping into them in a dark, Yeti-infested sewer).

Which is one of my favorite pages of Fade Away, incidentally. The 2nd Doctor and the Brig meeting.

I noticed that as well. Although, it did take until the end of series six for them to mention the Brigadier.

Lis Sladen got a dedication in the main show, which as the star of her own show seems right.

The Brigadiers (Well, Nick Courtney's) death was an actual plot point, and no less than he deserved.

Personally, I hope they don't. I can understand why they did with the Brigadier. It was the push that the Doctor needed, but with Sarah Jane, I hope they keep refering to her as much as the Doctor does with his other Companions, and that is all that's mentioned about it.

They need to bring back more classic companions, like Peri, Melanie, Ace, or Grace - LOL!!! Ace and Grace XD

PaulHanley In reply to CGren123 [2012-09-07 01:12:19 +0000 UTC]

I really agree. I think even the Brig should have been left alone. There was something nice about him living on to the 2050s like in the books (and quite a few make reference to that). But I THINK Moff's implication is that he died in modern times. THE WEDDING OF RIVER SONG is a vague about it, but the little bit of info that's leaked out about the upcoming THE POWER OF THREE implies they might nail it down indisputably.

Still... we're fans- we can ALWAYS figure ways out of it. We ARE the people that came up with Season 6B, after all.

Oh wow, this is cool! I loved all the SJA references in this one! And the TARDIS in the last two panels is both comical, and reminds me of that scene a long time ago when two art critics were talking about the TARDIS parked in a museum.
